  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Starting to budget out a system that will be able to smoothly edit Scarlet fixed R3d's at the potentially highest bit rates..

Right now I have a Zotac sumn' or other that does fine with 5D2 footage but is close to choking every now and again..

I was thinking : ZOTAC AMP! ZT-40102-10P GeForce GTX 480

It's around $500 as I post this, would you get something different?

much love, Kalani-

Depends on what editing software you are using. CS5 runs R3D files natively. Adobe gives their stamp of approval on 2 Nvidia cards with Cuda last time I checked - the GTX 470 and the Quadro FX5800. I got the 470's. Quadro's are a bit steep.

Yep no GPU support with a GTX480 unless you hack CS5. I got a Gigabyte SOC 470.

thanks for the information, I do have CS5 and can't wait to fill it with R3D's : ) Wow, that Quadro card is the price of a used Civic.

Here is the actual list of nVidia video cards certified by Adobe :

I think anyway that Adobe will shortly release an update to make it more compatible with the new GPUs (the GTX580 seems to be a BEAST).

As said the GTX 580 would be the one to go for and its easier on the PSU compared to the 480.

GeForce GTX 285
GeForce GTX 470
Quadro CX
Quadro FX 3800
Quadro FX 4800
Quadro FX 5800
Quadro 4000
Quadro 5000
Quadro 5000M
GeForce GT 445M

Amend list to support CUDA magic, from

Hi, I wouldn't go with the gtx 480.. right now you can get the gtx 570 for way less ($349)and it's almost the same or go with the gtx 580 for $499 (newegg).. and then do the little trick in CS5 to have GPU enabled (easy to do, and even on the adobe forum people recommend doing it) the only thing is that if you get any bugs you can't get support if you say you did this...
And if building a new system the 2nd gen of intel processors are amazing and cheap...
hope this helps

I'm really surprised the Quadro 2000 isn't on the list, given it's similar, if not better, performance over the Quadro 3800.

Ultimately, I was hoping to combine my CAD requirements with CS5 GPU accelerating card and not spend a fortune of course. It's either the Quadro 2000 + GTX 570 or a single Quadro 4000 at this point.

Would daisy chaining two $300 cards make sense or is that more for gaming?

you don't have to wait, there are plenty samples of R3Ds out there,
the sooner you'll start testing your system the better;
PM me if you have any troubles, but from all software i tried, CS5 is not the fastest one to work with R3D, so far, on the same i7 960 12Gb Ram SSD RAID 0, out of SC5, Edius, Avid and Vegas, Vegas is a champion, but I really like Color Finesee.
I'm not sure though if that will be true in Mac land, excluding Vegas :)

GTX 580 cards heat a lot (and don't even think to get a 480, heat is terrible). Not sure these cards are enough stable for a production use.

Buyer Beware...

Buyer Beware...

Ive posted a few here about the nvidia quadro 4000 and mac pro 12-core.
Ive had nothing but problems with this set-up. and it doesnt stop at RED Rocket with RED Cine X either.
Numerous crashes with CS5 using After Effects. I use this app as much as I breathe so it kills me that it doesnt play nice with our current line-up.
Original set-up was MP 2.93 with 32GB RAM w/ATI 5870.
I now have that set-up together again for testing.
I hate it :P
In AE, frames lag and goes to black time to time.
Now of course it doesnt mean the crashes are gone.
their just fewer than before.
I was going to put back the RED Rocket card along with ATI but I think Im going to start from scratch and install the Nvidia then blow the OS off and re-install.
Ive had great sucess with other Nvidia's on Mac e.g. 4800 and 4500 as well as the killers in my BOXX (5600).

Never had any crash on a Windows 7 64 bit rig & CS5 AE. :rolleyes5:

I've been using a gtx 480 with cs5 for almost a year now, and other then the fan noise it makes occasionally, I find it to be incredible. The heat is hardly an issue if you have a decent air system in your case. (unless you are running in sli. Which has no gain in cs5)

After reading about the gtx 580, I see all the pro's of the gtx 480 with none of the cons (heat and noise level. WHICH btw are incredibly overrated). So I would spring for that. It is much cheaper then the Quadro's.

Nice. I've been trying to find the right card for my budget. I have this monstrous Antec case that has tons of space and airflow.

So, should I be sailing pretty smooth with :

i7 920
12gigs ram
128 SSD OS and programs
2 Velociraptor 600gb in Raid 0 for active projects (1.2tb )
4 TB backup
Gtx 580?

I love PCland. After being a loyal Mac user for 12yrs, I just love how flexible things are on the dark side ; )

Thanks for all the help!
