So, i'm JUST ABOUT READY to make the purchase and officially enter the RED family but have a dilemma. If i buy the side handle and navigate with that... then do i need the $1600 touch screen??

For $1600 i can either:

1) Purchase used older Red pro 5.6 inch and an additional 64gb mag

or

2) Purchase the touchscreen LCD... NO ADDITIONAL MAG.

Which would you suggest. Does the Red Pro 5.6 or 7 inch work with scarlet no problem?? If so, i think that have 2z 64gb media cards, is better than have 1x and a touch screen monitor? no?

You technically don't need the touchscreen to use the camera if you've got the side handle. If extra media is important to you then I would go with the 1st option. Of course it is appealing to be able to use the touchscreen for focus and quick menu navigation. That's something you'll have to decide over.

The Red LCD 5.6 or 7 will both work with the Scarlet just fine.

I've been using the side handle for control on an Epic-M even when we have the touch screen on the camera. Clients like "the iPod screen" and like to touch stuff.
If you are comfortable with a DSLR style control setup of buttons and dials, you'll be fine without the touch screen.

Being poor, I have decided to...perhaps...go cheap on my opening kit. And build on it...

I've decided that if I do pull the trigger, I'll be forgoing 4K and recording directly to an ATOMOS Ninja.

My question...

Is this a shootable kit (I know, it's only 1080p for now...)
Scarlet with Canon Mount
RedMote
DSMC Power Pack
ATOMOS Ninja

If I just bought those four, could I be shooting? And then begin adding on, adding SSD's and the like?

I just really want to lock in the price before 3500 dollars gets added to that base package on Jan 1st.

@BrandonChristensen
Your RED configuration comes to $10,450 plus the ATOMOS Ninja is about $1,000 puts it at $11,450. Let's look at one alternative.

http://www.red.com/store/scarlet/product/scarlet-x-w-al-canon-mount-side-ssd
SCARLET-X W/ AL CANON MOUNT / SIDE SSD / AC POWER ADAPTOR - (DSMC) - PACKAGE PRICE $9,750
http://www.red.com/store/media/product/base-media-pack
SCARLET MEDIA PACK (REDMAG SSD 1.8” – 64GB + RED STATION 1.8") - PACKAGE PRICE $1,200

This package comes to $11,950 ... only $500 more. The drawback is you'd have to download the data off the SSD every 20 minutes, but you could shoot a full resolution.

Just a thought.

Check out my EPIC/SCARLET price spreadsheet to price out some other options.

Thanks Robert.

I've priced it out, and I think I'd go:

Scarlet w/Al Canon Mount - 9750
Redmote - 550
DSMC Power Power Pack - 515
ATOMOS Ninja - 995
Pelican 1510 - 142

For a total of 11952.

From there, I will add (Probably a month or two later:

DSMC Power Pack - 515
Redmag Case - 30
Redvolt Case - 30
Scarlet Media Pack - 1200
Redmag 64GB - 950

Total of 2725.

So that would give me two options for shooting. One would be for longer format stuff, where I can shoot 1080p and monitor and all that jazz. And the other would be a kit where I can hot swap the 64GB SSD's and shoot in 4K (the way God/RED intended).

I'm a freelancer, and I have a wife and a new kid, I need to keep it as economical as possible...and breaking it down into two chunks will make it a lot easier.

As long as i can shoot with the ATOMOS Ninja, meaning I am not forced to buy either the EVF or the 5" Touchscreen, then I'd be perfectly happy with this set up. And it will grow with me.

ninja Module ?

To shoot with the ninja, does the scarlet have to be set to 2k.... Or can we still shoot in 4k and the ninja converts it to 2k like Redcine X does without cropping any of the image.

I'm thinking you can set it in 4K...if not, I'll have to reconsider. I will definitely need that 4K field of view.

Damian, the link works in this thread, didn't in the PM...but that's a great deal! I'm considering it...
