Hello

I know there is a lot of stuff on posting dailies to DVD, I am looking for the best process for daily delivery on rushes WITH SOUND and WITH a minor color correct on it, to DVD

I tired using redcine but there is no sound and is a long process . Any other apps or workflows I am not thinking about here. I will be using toast to burn and chapter markers will not be an issue.

For one hour on content, redcine estimates 23 hours of processing for 720p from 4k files, and gives no sound on a quicktime output.

I have a macpro quad with a 2.8 processor and 6 GB's of ram

Please advise

Comments, questions and suggestions are muchly appreciated.

Hey Aaron,

I would suggest the fastest way is to open your R3Ds in Red Alert, do your tweaks (don't use curves as they won't come through) and regenerate the Proxies.

Then just drag the proxie into Compressor and go directly to MPEGII for DVD.

If your audio is soft, you can bump it up in Compressor.

Should be pretty quick.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. We are on a two camera shoot and would be nice to batch process the clips. Anything other apps or ideas. I would like redcine(ish) process with sound, effecting and correcting multiple clips, creating 1 long images file.

I have also tired red cine batching the clips to a .mov and every time redcine crashes any ideas about that one?

So i guess thats two questions

Best

You could use Red Rushes to make standard def clips (I don't know why you would make 720p clips for a DVD, DVD's are standard def). Bring the clips into Final Cut, make one long timeline from them, apply color correction using FCP's color correction tools, and render out to one Quicktime movie. Take that movie into DVD Studio and make the DVD. Or, compress using Compressor by sending the timeline out via "Export Using Compressor." You can even make a 24 frame DVD this way, which will play smoother.

It's some additional steps, but using Red Rushes, even on a 4 proc machine, to make SD Quicktime files shouldn't take more than about 1.5 times running time.

Downrezing HD with compressor often makes for a pretty nasty looking SD DVD.

I would transcode to Prores 1080 HD in RedRushes, create a standard def timeline in FCP and drop your shots into that timeline. When FCP asks you to change the sequence setting to match the clip select "no"

Then just render the timeline, export an SD Quicktime and bring that into your DVD creation program.

Aaron, do your DVD dailies need to be of the highest quality? For some situations the goal is to get something that is decent enough to watch that gives an idea of shot composition and acting performances. Here's one workflow I use when quality is not an issue.

Open clips in Clipfinder. If need be, do a one light pass.
Render to 720P ProRes with a crop to given aspect ratio (for example 2:35 on current movie) at 1/4 or 1/8 resolution.
Import clips into FCP, drag them into timeline, add chapter markers (makes it easier for people to jump to various takes and such) and export quicktime movie (not self contained).
create MPEG2 from that and burn to DVD.
If Timecode window burn is necessary that can be done in Clipfinder as well.

By using the lower resolution you can generate these while on set. 1/8th goes very fast. If higher quality is needed, then render out at 1/2 standard.

Awesome guys

Will try all of the processes and get back.

Cheers
