Hello, I'm wondering what the current best on set iPad reviewing/playback experience is?

For anyone whose used Live Play, I'm presuming (I can't find any confirmation of this on their site or googling) it wouldn't be able to provide playback with .R3D's and would need to be accessing a media pool transcoded to ProRes or similar?

I was wondering that too. I guess with the DSMC² Prores, it's not a big deal though.

I'm curious about the bandwidth, and the potential lag on an iPad with Weapon Prores 422 LT.
Would it be better to have 1080p Prores 422 proxy 36mbps, or smoother, 720p 23mpbs.

There are a few strategies for using liveplay and ToDaillies, the other Lightiron App.

It all depends what you need and there are two apps.

App 1 is LIVEPLAY
App 2 is TODALLIES

1. LIVE PLAY is set up for Immediate viewing

If you are using Liveplay the best thing is to have a teradec cube or something similar that encodes the camera output on the fly and sends the live encoded h.264 media it to a designated media folder after every take. This can all happen in real time because real time H.264 gets written to a folder and the the moment a take is over it is available for review by anyone on the network.

You need a computer at the DIT station running LightIron server which serves teh media in that folder via wifi over the network you have setup. On that computer you can set up all th euser accounts and give each person on set access to the media and the ability to write metadata to the folder. This means that wardrobe, continuity, camera department, who ever can make their own notes for each take. It is a beautiful thing to see in operation.

2. Non real time TO DAILLIES

This is more designed for end of day, take home iPads to review takes, etc. Same principle apply as above, but the media is encoded and placed into the server folder and each iPad DOWNLOADS the media to the iPad so it can be taken away form the wifi network and viewed in a hotel room, etc.

Here too, you want to be encoding that media to small file sizes or the iPad can fill up pretty quickly.

Sample workflow.

After camera mag backup

Drop all the QT FILES onto a compressor droplet and encode all your prores media to some lightweight H.264 media to be downloaded. Or use resolve to do a onelight and setup a render preset. I've run this workflow successfully many times. The software is amazing, because all the notes cam be imported into FCP X as they are contained in one XML database. SO you can have all the data around any shot right in the NLE.

Very, very smart.

I am considering selling my Teradek Case that is setup to use Liveplay and Todalies all in one box. It uses a Teradek cube as well. PM if you are interested in the setup.

Thanks for all the info. Liveplay looks great but we will be out in the middle of nowhere with no internet. Ideally we could have a local network setup and with no effort from the camera dept or DIT we could have all the iPad's have the takes automatically uploaded to them as close to realtime as possible for individual playback. I saw something like this at NAB but don't remember what it was.

David, did you know the price for Liveplay and ToDailies? Is there a licence-rental to give it a try on a project?

Another Solution is Cinepostproduction's Copra APP. It works in the same way like the two Lightiron APP's.
OnSet on a MacMini in a protected WiFi-Network an as a hostet client server Solution for Dailies review over the Internet.

Live Play and Todailies have been consolidated to a single application, Live Play (version 3).
These now allow for BOTH live proxy files (to be generated by a Teradek Cube or Cinedeck or BlackMagic H264 ProRecorder) and then the app can also take rendered files and localize them for review off set. You can do this completely cloud based or you can just wirelessly sync files on the set.

What separates Live Play from other review tools is that our ability to foster enhanced metadata is really powerful. We have an advanced level of tagging which improves sorting. We are also the only company that supports fully automated multi-cam viewing (up to 7 cameras) and we offer frame-accurate ALE and XML exporting to Premiere, Final Cut, and AVID so you can send editors your notes which will populate in the NLE timelines. For Final Cut Pro X users, these can work as keywords so you can improve searching and sorting at the Library level.

If any of you want to do a test, send me an email (michael {at} lightiron {dot} com) and I'll have our team hook you up with a free temporary cloud license for Live Play 3 for you to test.

Live Play has thousands of users worldwide and we'd love to have your feedback to make Live Play even better!

Michael

(btw: Live Play 4 is nearly finished. And we're really excited about some of its new out-of-the-box features).

Ronny,

Just read what Michael Cioni (the guy who invented the concept) has to say. ALl I can say is it is rock solid and only gotten better over time.

PS: Thanks for chiming in Michael!

May I chime in to say that I like Copra? The only issue with them is that the DIT needs to have one of their supported apps i.e. On-Set-Dailies.

Michael Why you stopped local version of Live Play license which is yearly instead made it cloud based for weekly. We are happy to have it on our local server instead of LightIron cloud. Please reconsider the decision.
