I'm working with a non-profit theater that just upgraded to digital projection. I'm shooting a 30 second "eye-candy" preshow promo to play before every movie to show off the 4k system.

This is the first time I'll actually get to view something I've shot on Epic in 4k. They have a nice Barco projection system and I'm just wondering what the best format to playback on their system would be considering this is something that will be built into a playlist and played back at every screening. I'm experimenting with a few things, but I can't do DCP (cost) or ProRes (on a PC). I tried a high bitrate H.264, but the compression isn't great and I'm afraid on the big screen it really won't look good.

I'm working in the Adobe Suite.

Anyone have a suggestion for the best quality option to play off of their server?

What codecs are supported for playback? I would start there and see what you can delivery. And is there any expected metadata to be part of the playlist or is that something the theater will author in as needed? there's a long thread on this site for DCP creation software that is either free or very low cost. As far as codecs go, you may consider J2K if you have software or license to encode to it. There are also directions to be googled as to how to do ProRes encode on Windows.

It sounds to me, if it part of a playlist and part of every screening, this is done as part of the DCP authoring package in the MXF wrapper. Or are they using a pre-show type of server for this that are typically used for Ads, and other type content before the movie. That one may have more flexibility in codecs and formats. Whenever I have delivered content, it was as a DCP on a Linux formatted drive to meet their server specs.

Thanks Michael. I'm actually headed over there in an hour to scope it out and get more details. I believe they will have both a separate pre-show server for ads that has more flexibility as well as the DCP package. But the DCP side of things is all new to me.

Ideally I'd go with DCP, so I'll look into those free software options.
