  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

best MEDIUM zoom lenses to be used with canon mount?

Thanks Dustin! This was the impression I was getting.

To you have the VC version? if so, do you like the VC?

My plan is to have 3 Zeiss ZE primes and one walk around zoom for indie work. I also have / will have the PL Mount for anything I can rent cinema lenses for. I have access to some L Series zooms but the Tamron looks like a better option since sharpness and 2.8 is more important to me than focus mechanics. When I need focus mechanics I will grabs the ZE primes or rent cinema glass. Does that make sense?

I do have the VC version. For handheld VC is very helpful. There is a very noticable difference when in VC mode and with it turned off. For tripod work definately turn it off though, as when you pan it will jump when trying to compensate for the movement.

I just came across the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM lens. I'm really impressed with the quality to price ratio. It sells brand new for $669.00 at B&H. From people I have talked to and reviews I have read, the Sigma compares favorably and almost on par with the much more expensive Canon 17-55 IS. it is a hell of a deal and it has great Image Stabilization as well (OS) whereas the Tamron stabilization feature is extremely faulty (from what I hear)!

Does anyone know if this Sigma lens works on the Epic/ Scarlet Canon mount yet? If not, I hope it is profiled soon because it looks like a great lens to use on the Scarlet at 4K. Right now, this is the only thing holding me back from buying it!

Thanks!
AJ

I have been looking at the Tamron 17-50mm VC 2.8 lens recently for a walk around / run and gun since the sharpness on it is supposed to be great and the price is right. Any one tried this?

on BH it says

Di II Lenses are designed for exclusive use on digital cameras with smaller-size imagers. These lenses are not designed for conventional cameras or digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size (24mm x 16mm).???

Kevin, the R1 & MX sensors are similar in size to an APS-C sensor. The Epic-X is 25.9x14.5mm @ 5k I believe.

Here's a great sensor/FOV calculator that makes clear all of the different sensor sizes, from 1/2 inch HD all the way to Super35mm (no IMAX unfortunately:)

To anyone considering the 17-50mm, I'd recommend the TAMRON over Sigma version, because it's slightly sharper and the closest in sharpness to the Canon 17-55mm. However make sure to get the non-VC version, 'cause it yields sharper corners/borders at larger apertures than the VC variants.
I personally prefer the Tamron over the Sigma any day, cause I find they look more...i don't know..organic, juicier
