My company is getting a Mac Pro and money is no hindrance. (Unless you into the 20,000 and up area) Is it better to get one with 4x 256meg video cards or the 1 512 meg card? I need to hook up dual displays and a color timing monitor.

I'm also looking at the MXO2 Max. And a panasonic or flanders scientific monitor.

I was looking at this turnkey system..

But the stats aren't maxed out. I'd like the most VRAM (if that's what I need) and RAM as possible (32gb)

Anyway what's the best configuration possible?

why can't you hook up 2 displays with one 512 and use a kono card for the color monitor? even blackmagic would do the trick,

Talk to the guys over at Silverado think Torrey is still around on the forums so ask him and he can hook you up with what's probably some of the best specs for a mac Pro...especially if you were to eventually or are looking to work with RED footage at the best pace possible...

Edit:

Ram is nice...I've got 32GB. But, the system doesn't use every last ounce of it, apparently it maxes out usage at 16GB although it allows for 32GB, most probably for the future or so I've heard, maybe wrong...

For my two cents, I would up the graphics board to a 1Gb in case you want to do animation at some point. I agree with Imran on the Kona or Blackmagic card for I/O. Lastly, if you want to do hardware AVC/H.264 compression, look at adding the Matrox MCHD rather than the MX02 Max. It will do the same faster-than-realtime encoder offload, but leave the video I/O to a separate (Kona or BM card.)

Bottom Line, the B&H example skimps on display performance...any decent $200 NVidia card in the 200 series will enable 1Gb of DDR3-VRAM and dual monitor support, so why cut cost there?

One caution: watch the available slots, and buy the cabling last...that is after you select the monitors and display devices!

I'd love to say "we build these for you..." but we only really build PC systems, and I am not afraid to say, "Go with a pro, Jeremy."
Hope my input helps!

I don't want to speak for them directly, and I don't (not yet, anyway, I anticipate a future relationship) have any experience with them other than seeing them around here, on Twitter, etc, but:

Check out Silverado Systems - they have a configuration site (link here) for Mac Pro's with RED Rocket™ cards, etc.

I imagine if you email or give them a call they will help point you in a good direction.

My .02, good luck!

Best,

Hi Jeremy,

If you are editing Red footage than make sure you incorporate the cost of a Red Rocket. No editing system should be without it!

Best configuration???

Mac Pro 8-core 2.93GHz w/16GB RAM (perhaps 32GB, depending on your needs). ATI 4870 video, AJA Kona3, RED Rocket, Hardware RAID card with external RAID system.

I also recommend Silverado. These guys know what they're doing and will set you up right. Give them a call.

LOL...you guys found the unpublished RED Rocket Lab section of our site...

We put that up this week, but we've been tweaking the options since people keep listing out good things they want in their config.

If you see anything that SHOULD be posted in the config list, let me know! Now that the site it built up, additions are easy to make.

Is RedRocket compatible with FCP?

Jeremy,

There isn't native support for RR in FCP yet. You generate ProRes files with RR and use the ProRes files in FCP. Then, you can relink to the original R3D files in Apple Color or SCRATCH for final color correction.

... or use the RR to do onelight on the R3D's and create online DPXs for grading in whatever...

buy an HP machine. they are great. and wait till you get your hands on cs5..oh boy...

Lets just say that I think some of the realtime effects such as keying with REDRAW are going to be flat out amazing in performance..but what would I know about that? ;)
