  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best lenses for Canon Mount?

+1 for Rokinon, can't get better for the price, and they're pretty sharp, have 85mm and recently got 24mm cine, to my eye sharper than some L lenses

Short of going with some of the more premium third-party primes, the Rokinon cine lenses are the best bang for your buck right now. I have an 85mm Bower lens and I love it, a cine version should be amazing. Literally thought about this just the other day with the $4,000 RED One MX announcement, the cine Rokinons were the first thing that came to mind.

I'm still half surrounded by boxes here in New Zealand, in no good shape to post footage - but do a bit of searching, there's been a fair bit of discussion about the Rokinon lenses and some examples posted.

For my money they hold up extremely well against the lower-end Zeiss glass, and that seems to be a general opinion. They don't have the precision of MPs or RPPs, or the character of Superspeeds, but at the price, who cares?! They're a set of decent workaday fairly neutral primes that *anyone* can afford to own. All they need is the 50 to round out the set, and ideally something fast and wider than the 24 - I'm hoping for an 18/1.4 and we have a poor mans set of speeds :-)

I'm really curious about the 24mm. The frame grabs at the-digital-picture.com of it (samyang) are really bad. I have the Rokinon 35 and It's my go to lens. CA is a bit of an issue, but not a deal breaker. I want a whole set, I'm just not convinced they are worth using. I'm wondering what else is out there.

I wonder if the-digital-picture.com got a bad lens?

Ha, i just finished writing somewhere else that my 24mm is significantly softer than the 35 (both samyang). Anything under 2.8 is... well, pretty noticeable. But you know, to some extent makes sense, most of the sets i have worked with struggle with the equation speed + wide angle.

4k downsampled to 1080p from a shoot of mine last week. Scarlet with Samyang 24mm.

Definitely a cool image! That looks sharp. Hard to use as a test for the lens performance though! Also, what F stop were you using?

can't believe people still don't know about Samyang/ Rokinon considering this http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?83904-Rokinon-Cine-lenses-are-here!!
and numerous threads talking about them. I have seen test with the Samyang/Rokinon 85mm f 1.4 nearly identical to contax zeiss 85mm f 1.4. This just show how great these cheap Korean lens are. Anyway, did anyone done some proper testing with leica against other lenses?

The problem I have with these lenses is the inconsistent quality across their lens lineup, along with the cheap feel to the build quality. To me it makes more sense to invest in glass you want to keep for the majority of your career rather than a lens set just to get you by until.

Contax zeiss are good for the price but you can build a beautiful set of Leica R lenses for quite cheap if you don't need the ultra fast models and stick to the f2.0 and above models.

True, Leica R's are great. No one is arguing that. I think it all comes down to taste. I actually find Leica R's a little too "pretty". We worked with them a bit this summer, and don't get me wrong. They are AWESOME. Gorgeous actually. But...for me to own personally, that vintage Zeiss look for the 70's and 80's really hits a personal chord for me. At that time, Zeiss's philosophy seemed to be...we will show you the world...as it is...both the good and bad...equally....And I see that in the imagery...There is an honest humanity to that era of Zeiss glass that I'm very fond of. The new Zeiss looks to me follows the Leica R philosophy more...saturated, colorful, more contrast.

To give you a sense of how different Leica R's and Contax look, we did a shoot this summer with both, and the Contax were SO MUCH more low-contrast that at first our DP thought his Epic was BROKEN. The waveforms exploded and seemed to show about 1.5 stops more lattitude. He stopped shooting to check the camera. Make sure it was ok. And then he realized it was...it was just the LENSES.

Anyway. It's all about taste. What's more important I think is getting a consistent set of glass with numerous focal lengths (for creativity) that will last you a lifetime.
