If I can afford only one lens for now, which one would be "the one" to get me going for general use?

- what brand/model
- PL or Canon
- focal dis. (best suited for the crop factor without distortion)

I have a Zeiss 50mm/1.4 on my Canon already but I would like to keep Canon/Red separate if best idea. Thaks guys.

You may be best off with a Canon mount, zoom lens to give you a decent range focal wise. Maybe a Canon 24-70 L Series II. You could also go the Zeiss Contax route, definitely cheaper and my favorite set of lenses. They have a 35-70 zoom that you can get for about $400. You could also pick up the Zeiss Contax 80-200 for about the same. Then you would have 35-200 focal lengths in 2 lenses for less than $1k. :-0

if money is no object the fuji cabrio 19-90 is amazing.

I would agree with Evin (he knows lenses) but I have a feeling your budget won't allow it. If thats true I'd go with Chris's suggestion. The Canon 24-70 L Series II is a good quality DSLR lens. Like most DSLR lenses it will have a short throw but that's the price you pay for not having to pay the price for PL's. I frequently use three L-series lenses (16-35, 24-70, 70-200 IS) for run and gun. You might also consider the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. A little slower but more range. Good luck.

What do you think about this one? I can use it on the Canon as well on the future Epic.

I started out with the RED 17-50mm PL. Very happy with that. A bit short, but I needed the wide end. Depends on your needs as well. For a new project that will be a bit run and gun, I'm considering a Sigma 18-35mm Eos and a Contax 28-85 Eos converted. Depends on budget, I would get the 19-90 cabrio if I could afford it.
