  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best laptop out there for CS5?

No expresscard slot, no USB3 / expresscard slot...

No expresscard slot, no USB3 / expresscard slot...
Only this? Nothing else?

No workarounds to this lack of expresscard slot, USB3 / expresscard slot?

I think a monitor suitable for color correcting and grading is important too. Not 3D as well?

If you need a serious laptop for editing, wait for something with eSATA and a CS5 CUDA certified GPU. If not, any current PC or Apple with a decent amount of RAM should be fine. Monitoring can be done with Matrox MXO.

1. I said "wait". There is none, AFAIK.

2. The matrox MXO is a nice little external box that turns your DVI output into progessional video. It has pretty decent calibration possibilities. No slot on the laptop needed.

The release date is mid may I believe (less than a month now). We are all done here at the plabt and are looking forward to you all enjoying 64bit speed, memory and the new Roto Brush tool for AE as well as content aware fill in PS, and a slew of other amazing features in the suites. At NAB, using Premiere with the new mercury playback engine, I saw one of my coworkers play back an 8K sequence (that's right, 4 4k RED files side by side) in real time with no rendering. If you haven't already seen the demo's for the new features take a look at the links below, they are eye-bleedingly good. Onwards hurrah!

Here are some system requirements. You can find the premiere graphics requirements for GPU Mercury acceleration here too.

When I need to color correct I will get a nice external screen, it was just not reasonable for me to pay the same price for an HP and get less....

This is what I ordered:

Its nice that I can change the nVidia once a mobile card will be released ... but for my needs this is going to be just fine...

Hey Amir, that 8k sequence wasnt running at full res playback resolution though, was it? I think I saw a similar demo in a video online but it was running at 1/2res playback, which seems it might indicate that besides storage requirements, the limit of a top of the line 8core workstation will probably be about one full res R3D or four 1/2 res R3Ds. That is surprising since I talked to someone who seemed to say the limit of a standard i7 quad cpu was just under one 4k R3D playing back at 1/2 res. Seems the NAB demo computer could process about twice that much footage in realtime assuming pretty linear multicpu scaling.

BTW those sys reqs say 1280x900, is that a typo? doesnt sound like a standard resolution to me...

I think we'd also love to hear more about further support for other CUDA GPUs. Seems pretty strange that the GTX285 is supported but so many others (including faster ones) are not... I assume that is because it is one of the very few MAC-compatible nvidia GPUs. Can you comment on whether CUDA GPUs accelerate debayers and standard playback or if it is just used for real time effects processing? I heard it mentioned that playback without effects applied is always processed CPU-only. This would mean no matter what we will have very real divisions between how many cores can play R3Ds at what res.

I wonder if adobe certification for the GTX285 for CS5 translates to the GTX285M, I would be surprised if that were the case since I believe the mobile GPUs use totally different drivers.

Why need for that?

Isn't it possible to simply change the hard drive and replace it for another one? SSD type for example?

Most of us working in video use external RAID drives due to large data size. That requires a fast I/O method, and FW800 is not fast enough. With an expresscard slot, a eSata card can be added for significant speed improvements. USB3 is also quite fast, although there is still limited support for it from RAID vendors.

GTX285M isn't supported. First they told me it was but then that it isn't...

Yes, it means I did the best I could under the current conditions, there are no mobile cards that support CUDA, and I needed to order a laptop... so what else could I do? Take a 6 months nap?

At least in this laptop the card is user changeable... so when a mobile card comes out, I could buy it and change it myself.

Sorry, something that I don't understand. For dummies and editing short clips, wouldn't it be possible to work on flash memory aka CF, SD, etc instead?
