Can anybody recommend the best power inverters to charge Red Batteries from your basic cigarette lighter?

I did this with a random cheapish inverter on my last volcano trip. The poor inverter almost glowed from the strain, and one battery at a time is sufficient, but it worked; no problems with charger. I'll dig it out and post what it says on the label in my copious free time.

This is a lot to ask of the wiring that feeds the cigarette lighter socket in most cars. The better option would be a hard-wired inverter that has plenty of headroom over the power required by the charger and have it hard-wired to your battery.

any 300 or higher watt inverter should work fine to run one charger. I have a 300 watt inverter that I travel with, and one wired directly to the battery on my van, never had a problem with either.

I would suggest you instead consider a charger that runs of 12v directly. We sell one made by Switronix that works well with RED bricks.

Joe,
about anything will work....BUT, that said....a QUALITY inverter like Heart will make life a bit easier.....I charge from a heart 500w inverter all the time from my car. Then another Heart 2500w inverter on my boat when not running a generator. No issues at all since 2007. Best to run it directly off of a 12v battery and even better if it's a deep cycle battery instead of a standard car battery.....that you are often charging with your car's alternator--assuming you are doing this in a car.

I have to say, on a black and decker inverter I was unable to charge batteries - hence the need for a true or pure sine wave. My inverter was rated at over 1000w...

Dan,
no need for a sine wave inverter---typically if they work they work. sine wave is good for appliances. Black and Decker inveters--well, you said it, there's the problem all together.

you are best to go down to a marine supply and see what choices you have---stay away from radio shack, costco, wallmart, home depot if you want to get a decent inverter.....I've got a rather large solar encampment on a lagoon with 16 cabins and a large dining and charging station....and i have gone through many a inverter and solar products to find what i think are best IMO.

Thanks, Mitch. We're in a real pinch for Monday and Tues. We're stopping by B&H in the morning. Will be looking for a Heart, Johnny. Thanks all!

B&H Joe? You're coming out East? You could borrow mine, which I *know* will operate the charger! It's a bit cheap and nasty but it works: google "vr3 inverter 175w" and you'll find plenty.

Or you could stop by AbelCine. I have one of the Switronix 12v chargers in rental.
