  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best HOME 1080p Porjector, thoughts?

I have the Sony "Pearl" VPL-VW50 SXRD , and it is just great, when I tested out with the Blue ray DVD of Planet earth, I was blown away by the image quality, obviously the fact that I have a Draper HIGH DEF GREY Tensioned screen helps a little too, but the projector rocks.

It's shooting on a 133" DaLite HiPower:

I love the image it throws. The VW60 is even better.

Dayum that's a cool theater and way to show your RED color love.

Thanks!

Now if only I had a reason (and the money) to buy a Red One. Maybe a Scarlet?

I'm here out of pure admiration fo Red, both the Camera and the Company, so I don't have much to add in the way of the digital cinema side of things. I do have some experience in the projection side of things, however, so if I can help there at all I'm happy to.

Great place this is.

PS- I documented the theater build here: http://caesare.homeip.net:32171/basement/ if anybody is interested.

I would steer away from LCD projectors unless you are able to do some first hand analysis. The sub $5000 LCD projectors have always disappointed me in the past.

I would recommend the Sony SXRD based projectors like the BRAVIA VPL-VW40 or the VPL-VW60.

I am currently an audio video designer but used to sell high end equipment before that. When the VPL-VW100 came out, $10k back then, it was indistinguishable to the Meridian/Faroujda MF1 and many of our Runco DLP projectors at twice the price. It was hard to sell something twice or three times the price that performed the same as this. Needless to say, Sony did a great job.

IMHO, LCD projectors never give enough good blacks and DLP's aren't worth it until you get three chips (rainbow and other issues). LCOS/SXRD/D-ILA technology is really nice and Sony has done a great job of getting them to be quite cheap in the last few years.

See them for yourself though, that's the only way to know for sure!
