Currently helping kit out a small post facility. They were below the 4gb of ram to core threshold in both their 09 8 cores and the 2010 12 core so that was my first move to up them from 12gb and 16gb. So wondering what you might recommend next based on they use the same source drive as their target output drive and the caches are living on the internal hard drives of the mac pros. So I know in an ideal world I make them get a different drive for source vs target vs apps/os vs cache (or shared storage with various partitions on a raid 5.). its a 3 bay operation, what would you recommend cost wise for either shared storage/plug and play and what would you recommend for GPUs? currently using stock half Gb of Vram in the 09s and 1gb of Vram in stock 2010 12 core all ATI Radeons (ATI Radeon HD 5870 and Radeon 4870 in other two)... Saw some cheap GPUs on Macsales with 3gb of Vram for 500 a pop, not bad considering the massive amount of change I'm thinking... but maybe Cuda centric models would be better?
They mostly use CC suite and FCP7 for their apps of choice (currently).
Its tough cuz in an ideal world i'd say great new trash cans and SNS Evo...but not an option...so more ram and what else would pack the most punch here? i know fcp7 is 32 bit so these machines are great for that...but for CC they really lack power in GPU, and also storage throughput. using the internal for os/apps/cache and external for source/targets of encodes cannot help anything throughput wise when the external is a single disk drive too and internal is Sata and not SSD either, so really looking for best cheap options...which stuff to get raid 5s for, or what is a cheap shared storage option like SNS Evo but not 30k for a usable amount of space... basically a "what would you buy to fix this" kind of a thread... I'm sure these machines have some more life if you can get 6 times the Vram for 500 bucks now then stock GPUs? that seems like a steal per unit vs new towers..
