Hey there,

I am getting 2 8 core xeon processors, 64 gb of ram and a raid system. I am currently not in a position to spend that much more on a blazing fast gpu so what is out there that is really good for the money? I have been looking at the 690 which looks sweet. How does that compare to a lower end Tesla or Quadro? Once I get more funds I will upgrade but I need something to get me going.

Thanks for your help!

There's no outright answer to this question and it depends completely on your usage scenarios.

The fastest reference graphics card right now is the AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. Including non-reference designs, Sapphire Toxic 7970 GHz 6 GB.

However, it is more than likely that you will require CUDA, in which case the fastest single GPU for CUDA in general will be GeForce GTX 680. If the application is capable of using its both GPUs, then GTX 690. However, there are some compute heavy situations, particularly double precision, where the GeForce GTX 580 and GTX 590 are still faster, but in applications like Premiere Pro CS6, GTX 680 4 GB is usually faster. If you require the specific features offered by workstation GPUs, Quadro 6000 is the fastest. Actually, that is not true, the laptop Quadro K5000M is faster! Hugely bizarre situation where the top laptop GPU is faster than the top desktop GPU. What it does indicate is that a next-gen Quadro might be around the corner. On the other side, the AMD FirePro W9000 is a beastly workstation card, but again, lacks CUDA.

Tesla K20 is releasing in 3-4 months' time and will be the undisputed compute champion.

Thanks so much for your help. I do everything in cs6 so I am guessing I need the Cuda cores. Would like a used Tesla or Quadro 6000 be better for this purpose than a 680 or 690? The only thing I will be working in is cs6, and redcine x.

any of the gtx cards will out perform the quadro 4000. you get the quadro because it's a staple workstation card, and software that programs for that card support and can trouble shoot it 100%. usually a lot of higher end software doesn't officially support off the shelf gaming cards because they change in models so often, vary so much in performance from generation to generation, and wont' be sold anymore not soon after the next gen card is out. which is every year. but price vs cuda vs clock speed/memory, any of the gtx cards are gonna out perform the quadro 4000. so if you aren't running anything that specifically says it won't work with a gtx card, I'd go for a gtx 580 or 680. best bang for the buck.

Great! Thanks for the tips everyone! Its very helpful. Is there anything that can take the place of the red rocket that's much cheaper? This may be a terrible question (I am new to this) but does the kona 3 or hdlink 4k from blackmagic if paired with a gtx card act the same as a red rocket card? Like I said..I have no idea what I am talking about. :)

nope. only a rocket does what a rocket does at the moment.

best suggestion if it's just cutting in premiere with r3d. REALLY fast raided storage, and set playback in premiere at a quarter. should give you pretty good results.

For Premiere Pro CS6, go for GTX 680 4 GB. Alternatively, you may find a good deal for the now obsolete GTX 580 3 GB.
