  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best follow focus for cinelens?

I applaud what redrock are doing. it only takes one company to put the time in and set reasonable prices as RED has done.

Very commendable,I've got one, unfortunately it doesn't work as well as the Arri.
Difficult to explain to the client, why the focus pulls aren't as smooth as they should be.

It really hurts how much you have to pay for some gear, but look how long it lasts. Both of my sachtler heads were made in the 1970's and still do an excellent job. Old Arri matteboxes are still selling for over $1,000 used and so are the follow focus. Because they sell so few and the gear lasts forever, they can't afford to sell a follow focus for $500 because they will only sell maybe 500 a year. Redrock is starting to make good gear (I love their mattebox), but it's not at the level of Arri gear. It just is not sadly. But hey, for $800, I got a mattebox that kills anything else for under $2000. Prices probably will come down some if RED keeps selling cameras the way they've sold the RED one. If there is more demand, there is a decent chance Arri/whoever else will drop prices. Heck, Arri's already released their low cost follow focus/mattebox for the ex-1. I would have never guessed they would have released something like that 5 years ago.

prices for video/film related accessories are off the charts. I don't care about all the waffle involving precise machining and all that stuff its still not worth the price. I think some people prefer it stays expensive so the peasants don't get access. people are always asking for things to be more expensive on here oh but not so expensive that they can't get them. they don't want to pay sony prices but they don't want the rest of us to afford them either. I wished people relied more on their talent than their ability to access pricey tools

Instead of cursing the darkness, light a candle and recognize an opportunity. You should be an entrepreneurial peasant and go into the business of making those same quality parts and see if you can sell them substantially cheaper and stay in business. If you succeed you won't be a peasant anymore.

bottom line.. like it or not.. this industry has a boner for name brand.
ARRI is it for FF and MB among other items (arri remote focus.. or preston are your wireless choices)
there are great choices for smaller low budget and outside of hollywood productions, but truthfully.. if your looking to rent a package, anything but the norm wont make it onto a set.

if its just for your own pet projects... then do what you gotta do.

I'm working from home today so I don't have my parts list handy, but that gear says for the FF5. If you give us a call at Abel we'll be happy to hook you up. We still have special pricing for REDusers on ARRI FF4, MB20-II and LMB-15 kits in place.

If you figure out after all that the best follow focus solution for cine lenses is
not Arri, Panavision, Chroszie, Denz, or others...
it is C-Motion.

just don't be a blind and stupid.
