I love filmmaking documentaries. Share your favorites. It's always nice to discover new films.EDIT:Here's the compiled list so far from the thread: (some of the descriptions are from the forum users..)Lost in La Mancha (Depressing.. about Terry Gilliam's unfinished Don Quixote movie.)Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker Apocalypse (About Apocalypse Now)Audience of one (This one is a real comedic gem - and he was doing 65mm HFR in 2007! Take that Peter Jackson.)Burden of Dreams (Making of Werner Herzog's film Fitzcarraldo)My Best Fiend - Klaus Kinski (Great doc about Klaus Kinki and Herzog)Overnight (douchery caused by overnight success...)American Movie (Very well made doc about 2 guys making a horror movie - hilarious and sad at the same time.)Unknown Chaplin: The Master at Work (Goes over Chaplin's workflow and scene/story problem solving approach.)Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff (Brilliant, and a real insight.)Visions of Light (1992 - Cameramen and women discuss the craft and art of cinematography)The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing (Documentary about the art of film editing.)

"My best friend" is amazing.

I have to check "burden of dreams".

+1 on David Fincher special features. They give you a lot of insight.

Overnight (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390336/)

Amazing documentation of the douchery caused by overnight success...

Came here to say this one. Though I would contend that fame and success only amplify who and what you are, and in his case he seems to have always been this way - and he's clearly somewhat delusional.

One that I have always returned to: The Matrix Revisited. It's a feature-length documentary covering the making of the first movie. Just how unlikely this project was: original, unheard-of scenario (the money-men originally said it would be another Johnny Mnemonic) with writer directors with only two credits and one picture behind them. The ground-breaking visual effects. And best of all, I got the feeling of what it must have been like to be on the show. They finished the opening sequence close to the start of principal production and showed cast and crew. You can imagine how that would energise a film unit!

Jack Cardiff: Camerman is brilliant, and a real insight. As is the classic Visions of Light.

Lost in La Mancha is great, as is 'The Hamster Factor' which was the same guys doing behind the scenes on 12 Monkeys.

I was going to mention My Best Fiend & Burden of Dreams, but Brandon beat me to it!

Something I found enlightening when watching the extras on Herzog's Bad Lieutenant is that he likes to operate the clapperboard... he gives a typical Herzogian (is that a word?) explanation for why he does it.

Here's 3:

Lost in La Mancha (Depressing.. about Terry Gilliam's unfinished Don Quixote movie.)
Heart of Darkness (About Apocalypse Now)
Audience of one (This one is a real comedic gem - and he was doing 65mm HFR in 2007! Take that Peter Jackson.)

Thank you, I'll watch Audience of One tonight! What is this about 65mm HFR?

That's right he was shooting 65mm film at 60fps. This guy is completely delusional.

WOW! This is gonna be good!

ROB ZOMBIE holloween has a special features documentary.. its like 2-3 hours long, its day by day the entire film making process..
pretty interesting to watch, if your not in the biz... otherwise its the equivalent of being at work in your dreams.. but its still a fun watch..

Amercan Movie. Not exactly a bts doc... Not exactly sure how to describe it.

I was going to recommend this one too but like you I'm not sure how to describe it.. All I can say is that it's a GREAT doc! It definitely fits here.

"Overnight" is great too like other posters noted.

If it's not a word it should be :)

Seen his "Herzogian" explanation for stealing a 35mm camera from the Munich Film School?

Werner Herzog said:
"It was a very simple 35mm camera, one I used on many other films, so I do not consider it a theft. For me, it was truly a necessity. I wanted to make films and needed a camera. I had some sort of natural right to this tool. If you need air to breathe, and you are locked in a room, you have to take a chisel and hammer and break down a wall. It is your absolute right.”

Just bought "Burden of Dreams" on iTunes (Criterion) thanks for the suggestion.
