• Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best eSATA/USB 3 PCIe card in a Thunderbolt 2 enclosure?

Have one in a cubix. It works.

Hi Paul,

which OS are u running ?

I got the card installed under Win 8.1 Pro x64 and I got the USB 3.0 ports working but the eSATA ports are not working....

I can see in the Device Manager that 2 x RAID CONTROLLER are missing drivers...

I tried to install the eSATA driver that came with the disc and I also tried the latest driver from their website - Win 8.1 won't recognize and/or install the eSATA driver...

Any idea ?

Thanks !

- Mike

just got one of theses Akitio Thunderbolt adapter boxes (http://www.akitio.com/accessories/thunder-dock) - TB-1 (connects to esata, FW800 and USB3) all in one very small box - love it. The RED-SSD reader works great along with all my esata and FW800 drives/boxes. Solves connections to the new MacPro from the older hardware.

Any update Mike? Did you get it to work?

it's been a major clusterfuck to say the least... it does not work on Win 8.1 x64 on my SuperMicro X9DRG-QF C602 mobo...

I tried everything in combination with what support suggested... they sent me drivers that were missing and that are not on the disc, but all of that did not help...

at best I can get the USB 3.0 working, the eSATA ports are missing drivers and when I install the ones from the disc or the ones provided by support Win 8.1 accepts the driver but then hangs forever at the driver installation...

you can't abort the driver installation process and when you manually shut down the system and reboot, Win 8.1 does not boot anymore, it now hangs forever at the logo screen...

u have to physically remove the card, boot into Windows, then shut the system down, plug the card back in and then boot back into Win 8.1... once u're in Win 8.1 - although the card is plugged in - nothing works now, not USB 3.0 and not the eSATA ports... device manager does not show any missing drivers...

this is all on a fresh Win 8.1 Pro x64 installation...

will update if anything changes, otherwise I gotta return this card...

Thanks for the update Mike! Sorry to hear of all the problems…

I wonder if it works in OS X, though…

In the meantime, for you, it might be better to just get the CalDigit...

yeah, that's the next card I'll try... support just said there's nothing more to try, so this card is not a solution at least not on this motherboard...

just a follow up on the Highpoint RU card:

I tested this card in a Win 7 x64 machine (different mobo) and it does work - both USB 3.0 ports and both eSATA ports... more importantly the RED eSATA mag reader does work !

the issue I have on the other workstation seems to be in regards with this specific SuperMicro motherboard...

Just thought I'd mention that I have been running the Sonnet Tempo SATA Pro 6Gbps 4 port card along with RRX and BMD Decklink 4K SDI in a Sonnet Echo Express III-D TB2 chassis and it all works well on Mac Mavericks.

I use the laptops 2 USB 3.0 ports and the TB2 chassis provides the rest of the connectivity.

another follow up on the Highpoint RU card:

got the card working now in Win 8.1 x64 with the SuperMicro board, card currently has to be installed in a PCIe slot that goes to CPU 1 - SM is working on a solution to get the CPU 2 connected PCIe slots working as well with the Highpoint card...

... and the RED eSATA mag reader is recognized and does work !
