i want to buy a dslr next month. i want to know what is the best dslr in the market right now. i do not want to buy a prosumer dslr and i want to know what high end photographers are using now. please suggest a model number and help me expain why it is good technically. thanks.

The best DSLR ist the Canon 1Ds Mark 3 right now.
It has 22 MPs and is fullframe.
If you want to go midformat then the Hasselblatt HD3 39 is the way to go.
I own the canon for 4 month now. It's a realy great cam. Nikon will bring out a 24MP cam in the next 6 months but the waiting line will be crazy.

Cheers
Tim

Nikon D3 for the person who wants a little bit (well, not really a little bit, but compared to how far other cameras go in individual fields...) of everything. EOS 1D Mark III (best for high speed), EOS 1Ds Mark III (best for high resolution). Sony announced a 25MP camera due to be released some time near December I think. Hasselblad HD3 seems great for medium format. Fuji FinePix S5 Pro for dynamic range, it's only 6MP though, but that's good for dynamic range.

Seitz has a camera that produces 160MP panoramic shots in a second. I don't think the native resolution is 160MP, I'm not sure. http://www.dpreview.com/news/0609/06093007seitzd3.asp

I could go on and on naming so many great cameras...

Little bit of everything?! If you want the best low light solution, up to iso 25,600!, then the D3 it is.

EOS 1D Mark III (best for high speed)

High speed what?

Continuous Shooting Speed:

Canon Mark III - High speed: 5 fps : Low speed: 3 fps
Nikon D3 - FX format: 1-9 fps DX format: 9-11 fps

...and here goes the great Nikon vs. Canon debate yet again!!!! May the best man win! Oh boy.

It all boils down to how much money you have to spend.

Just to be clear, there is the 1D and there is the 1Ds. The 1D does 10fps at 10.1 megapixels. The 1Ds does 5fps at 21.1 megapixels. Two different cameras.

I'm not getting into the battle over which camera is the best. At this point, they're all great. Go pick them up, hold them, shoot with them, play with the controls and menus. Also, decide if there is a lens system that you prefer. That's actually the most important part, in my opinion. At this price point, you can't go wrong.

once nikon went cmos like canon (and Red!), it's apples and apples in my opinion.

for me, after a certain level, it comes down to the lens, not the camera. so let's not forget the great nikon/canon lens debate.

of course someone will eventually say, it's just a tool, it's the "artist" that counts.

i've got the canon 40D with L lenses. somewhat economical without sacrificing quality. can't complain one bit.

It might not be "the best" but I LOVE the Canon 5D.
I just upgraded to a 5D from a 400D a few months ago and I've been blown away by the quality of the images I'm taking with it. Besides just sheer resolution, the full-frame advantage is really nice and I get far more out of my "L" series lenses with this camera than I ever did before. I can't afford a MkIII because RED took the rest of my money, :P but with the recent (large) price drop of the 5D bodies, I'd heartily recommend it to anyone considering a professional dSLR at an extremely reasonable cost.

lets say i want to take a lot of architectural and city theme pictures, would nikon or canon be a suitable camera and lens combination? i know the way you take pictures does matter in any theme but lets get technical here.

Okay,

first of all let me say that we are in a era were the Canon vs. Nikon makes very little sense as far as which one is better then the other. What makes sense is totally dependable on the shooter, two different cameras for two different uses, or should I say three different cameras for three different shooters.

What wryly comes down to it is, first of all what are you going to use with your RED, Nikon mount or Canon mount? Choosing the same mount as you will have on your RED is a no Brainer.

If none of the two will be used with your RED, then the questions are different.

Do you need High speed? Then go with the 1D III, it has no rivals in the market.

Do you need the best low light shooting capacity? Then go with the D3, it holds the best low noise at the highest ISO.

Do you need the absolute best image any DSLR has to offer? then go with the 1Ds III, it has the absolute best resolving power then any other DSLR in the market today.

This are relations to this 3 cameras only and there is no point bringing to the mixt cameras such as the Hasselblad H3D II, not unless you tell me that you are willing to spend 50k for a working camera set up.

If you can answer this few Q? then I can provide for better suggestions, recommendations and why!

Ciao

Its just a rumor I heard at a Red Users Group function, but someone stated that Canon is finally going to rev the 5D and its replacement will be "amazing". Hopefully that birdie was correct. I do wish I had a cropped sensor on my travels to Africa when a 70-200 is more telephoto. There are advantages to the cropped sensor when it comes to distance photography.

For now there are just that Rumors, but nonetheless the 5D is way overdo for a MK II version, as now stands as the only camera in the entire Canon line up, as not yet been up dated.

The last up date is the XSi Rebel, for sure the best Bird watchers and long range shooters, as not only will make your 200mm a 320mm but will also allow you to shoot in live view mode with AF, a must in long range focusing as well as in microphotography, an other way this little one has bound to shine.

Ciao

i have to say that all the modern upperclass DSLR are excellent, and i expect them to record 24P, 60P etc within some years from here.

Canon 1Ds Mark III

THREAD OVER.

As others have pointed out, the 5D is nice, but my fear about getting one now is that the next upgrade of this line is probably going to come out in the next year. The 5D has not been updated in something like 3 years, I think. It would suck to buy a 5D and have the 5D Mark II come out 2 months later. :(
