  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best digital cinematography in 2010?

127 Hours for me. Amazing movie and great cinematography.

TSN is a close second.

Also, in black swan, all the Subway sequences were shot on the Canon 7D, didn't notice the first time I saw it because I didn't know, but the second screening I saw I noticed a difference. You can see pics here: http://www.alexandrosmaragos.com/2010/12/black-swan-canon-7d.html

With regards to The Book Of Eli....I know it's shot Red and all, but I've seen a few behind the scene's images now where you just glimpse the camera, and it looks like they also used a MovieCam for some of the shots. There's a definite 35mm mag on the camera.

However, not sure. Anyway, best cinematography was True Grit by far.

Aside from The Social Network, which was one of the best movies I've seen last year, I think Claudio Miranda's cinematography for Tron was very, very nice (though I didn't like the movie that much).

Re: Deakins

True Grit inserts were shot on film

I have to say Deakins doesn't sound like a "fan" of this or that brand, imho, he's one of the best cinematographers in the world and chooses his tools depending on the project. I have no doubt he'd be willing to try and test the Epic (if he hasn't already), and he'd use it just like any other camera if he felt it was the best tool for the project he needs it for.

True grit inserts were shot on Alexa.
He was missing the whir sound of film because the Alexa is silent.

Mchael, I don't know for sure, all I know is that Deakins was talking about shooting with the Alexa (I suppose for tests or the movie was shooting with it) and had to shoot some inserts for True Grit. That's when he said he had been missing film, so I thought he was referring to shooting film on the inserts while in the process of working with Alexa on the other project. Anyway, a quick question on his forum should help solve this "mistery" :-)
