I am in the market for a new computer dedicated to working with my RED camera using an Avid workflow. I have tried FCP but still have a distaste for it and would like to stay with Avid. The problem is figuring out what would be the best bang for my buck. Initially, I thought I would go with a Mac Pro 3.0 Ghz 8 core or the new 2.26 GHz 8 core because RED seemed to be more intwined with Apple than PCs. I know some RED applications won't even run on a Windows based platform. However, with the new Metafuze being able to process RED footage, it would seem like a PC would be the way to go. From what I understand, using Metafuze with Avid Media Composer would completely negate the need to use any RED software whatsoever. With this in mind, I am wondering what other people's thoughts are in terms of buying a computer for a strictly Avid based workflow. Should I go for Mac or PC? If a PC, then which one since there are thousands of them out there? Also, I would be curious to know which computer Avid recommends with the new i7 processors being released. If anybody has any thoughts, I would love to hear them. Thanks.

I think you might still need to use some RED software along the way - something like RED Alert to create an RLX file for any color/exposure changes you might want to apply to the image to be baked in. Think of MetaFuze to be more like REDrushes than REDCINE. I use MetaFuze on the Windows side of my Mac via VMWare so I get the right tool for the job regardless of OS.

Thanks for the response. Really, I'm just looking for something to do offline work with. Out of curiosity, how powerful of a computer do you guys have setup at Avid and how fast is the transcode process for MetaFuze on it?

I would definitely recommend the Core i7 processor for media applications since it has been benchmarking very well, but I'm sure Michael can probably give you better specific recommendations. Check some of my past posts for more info on the i7 (and new Mac Pros)

On that note, does anyone have a good set of up-to-date Avid benchmarks (e.g. with i7 and different GPU solutions)? I hate recommending the Nehalem CPUs without specific benchmarks to back me up.

We are just seeing some of these system come in house. They are still under engineering benchmarking and support testing.

Do you know when you will have results? Hate to be a pest, but I've been waiting four months to buy a computer and how well the Nehalem processors work with the Avid will be a big factor in my decision.

Haven't heard anything yet... I may need to walk down the hill to other building.. ;)

We just are on the finishing side of a feature filmed with the Red one camera edited fully with Avid. We bought two avid with Mac hardware Mac Pro 2.8 octocore with 6Tb sato. After experiences with discovered that Mac is much more stable than PC. Avid because for me it is a very straightforward software, first to manage medias, two simple interface. And now there is more option to conform in DPX with Avid DS. of course there is alway room for improvment but there is good back up from Avid and third party software developpers such as Monkey extract and Cinexml
