Hey guys,

Wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the best, yet cheapest solution to keeping the Epic dry during rain shoots. Besides, Bag it bags and trashbags...

Any products out there designed specifically for the size of the epic? I'm talking quick solutions, not waterproof cases.

I will give the disclaimer that I designed and make the raincover for "Elements", a division of 3ality Technica. But since you asked... I think I have a pretty great product. It's something that took me quite a long time to design and test and I think I have the best thing out there. I originally made it for the Red One and added a few features for the Epic. It's made out of entirely PVC free fabrics which means it doesn't give off those odd wavy fumes in extreme heat, or crack under extreme cold. It also doesn't have that odd smell that PVC vinyl has. It also now has inlets for air which allows you to hook up a nitrogen tank for cool airflow. The Red one made it easy to cool by placing ice packs on the heat sink on top of the camera, but the Epic is a little more tricky which is why I added the air inlets as an option. However, I haven't had any reports yet of heat buildup in the Epic with the raincover which I'm guessing is because the fan could be allowed to run louder if there's rain everywhere. The cover is designed for a medium to large size Epic configuration with a matte box. The cover has velcro to attach to the edges of a matte box and access ports for a mechanical follow focus if used.

I've gotten a lot of great feedback on it from people who have used it in some really crazy conditions in Alaska and even a hurricane.

The rain covers I know of are

Ombre
Scubacam
ET

We use the Ombre which is better fitted.

Hey Ketch, you mean like this one? ;)

Hot off the RF welder. Just need to test fit it on someone's 9 inch monitor and I'll start production.

Ketch where you selling? How much shipped to US?

Yes Sean, I'll sale one, make me an offer, brand new never used, keep in mind shipping will be $70 form Italy.

Chris,

will this fit the Ombre rain Cover? If yes, I'll buy it.

Wow I was just about to make a thread about rain covers! Having something that you can be confident in, even during the most battling storms would be great. (Especially since I have 6 days of rain coming in from Sandy next week)

Chris, your cover looks excellent. Whats the workflow for swapping batteries? Just up and under that gray area in the rear? Also is there enough room for a dovetail/shoulder rig under there? I have the Wooden Camera hand held rig.

Shooting in a locked off position in a light rain with light to moderate wind recently, I used one of those chair umbrellas that clamp onto a chair. Camera stayed high and dry and kept on rolling. If it doesn't fit the tripod, you can secure it with elastic tie-downs.

+ 1 on the Ombre, I got two, and unfortunately selling both of them because now I only use the 9" LCD, and it is made to fit the 5"... :(

Lets hope some one does a 9" cover fast.

I could be interested to buy one of yours.
And maybe it could be a good oportunity to meet you around Siena or Firenze Signore Rossi. :-)
Best.

Hey Tony, yes you can use a handheld rig with my cover (3alitytechnica.com) and battery swapping is easy. There are several ways to access parts on the camera either by zipper or reaching under it. If the battery is on the back of the camera, then the zipper on the back is probably the best choice.

Ketch, I don't know if the 9 inch cover will work with other products, but its made for the monitor as a stand alone item. So fi you can put the monitor on a noga arm, then it should work fine.
