I’ve been holding off on buying cases for my Reds now for 18 months pending Epic, but I just can’t wait any longer. I do local shoots only so far, so keeping them wrapped in blankets in sturdy cardboard boxes has been my MO for awhile. Or, if I’m going any distance, one goes on an old Hartman carry-on—a perfect fit! (I’m not proud.) I can’t do this anymore. How do you guys design your cases, what works and what would you have changed if you could do it over again?

I remember a post 18 months or so ago from one of you who had a deep Pelican and layered all equipment from the Red to cables to EVF, lenses etc in one case. I see others keeping their Red and a monitor and/or EVF in one case, lenses in another and power in a third. Some of you use molded plastic and others ATA boxes. (Do you prefer the twist or pull down clamp?) And if ATA boxes, how thick? Everything is custom it seems.

My style is more studio oriented, though I have both the Mantis and Zacuto shoulder rigs. I have a small case for filters, which I know will be lost one of these days, so I want to make room in my matte box case(s) for filters, but in their original pouches. But what is a safe number of filters to pack away like this? 4? 6? You need a pola, an IR, a couple of ND’s and what as a minimum? I can always pack some additional filters in my luggage. Or do I invest in a case for maybe 20-30 filters? ( I have nearly 100 filters: ND’s, ND grads, ND hard, mists, diopters, etc, but you don’t take them all to a shoot.)

Do I make a small case for my LMB-5 with a few filters or do I make it larger to include a shoulder rig? Or to include some primes? Larger still to include the batteries so that I have fewer cases to worry about? I can see pros and cons to all this. Do I go molded plastic (Pelican and Storm, for example) with wheels, but they don’t stack. Or do I try to come up with similar sized cases that will stack?

Some of you have advised me on not making the cases too small (too easy to walk away), but what is too big?

There are a number of very sharp and thoughtful Redusers out there. Hopefully you can share your thoughts not only for my situation, but others who may have less or even more gear that I have.

We have some cases I designed for the RED camera kits in our rental dept. that many people have purchased from us and are quite happy with. We also have some nice generic similar cases with dividers that you can reconfigure on a job by job basis.

Here's our Red case design:

RED One Case

My case is designed much like an ENG case would be. I have it set up with pick n pluck foam in a Pelican Case (though I need to get some sturdier laser cut foam). All I have to do to get my camera running is take it out of the case and plug in the audio and LCD cable and put a battery on. It generally takes me much less time then most as I don't have to build anything.

tim,

most important for your ac (or yourself) is, i believe, that the camera lives with its camera plate attached and in an upright position for easy access and fast set up.
although tight, the pelican 1620 (the one red sells as well), manages to fit an upright red one plus camera plate plus handle - plus just enough padding top and bottom. that way you even get space for a dovetail plate, three batteries, the red charger, lcd, arm, cables and rods.

only downside to this set up is it's weight. too light/small to be carried by two (without being called a sissy by the gaffer) and too heavy/large for just one. and for some reason my ac's always manage to let me be THAT one...

Also consider whether it's going to be used as a carry on or strictly in-town usage. I.e. is it the entire package (or most of it) or just camera body, EVF, battery, monitor, etc.

Noah makes a good point. We just got one of these neat padded RED bags from Petrol:

Available to look at if anyone wants to swing by and check it out.

Torry, your Petrol Bag looks pretty sexy, but I have some misgivings. First, there is no room that I see for an EVF and monitor, batteries, etc. But it does look great.

Guys, here is where I'm going, though I haven't pulled the trigger yet. If I'm flying, I'm going to keep my camera, CF cards and maybe one lens in my old, pay-no-attention-to Hartmann carry-on. Then I'm going for a road case with wheels c/o eBay (lots of used ones on there from $30-$90 or so) to put power, cables, EVF, monitor, cables, a cut out for my Red, and Mantis rig. A second, smaller road case will carry my lenses, LMB-5, filters and supplies.

Since almost everying I do is within 20 miles of home, I usually just pack everything in my truck. If you guys go out of town, what is your minimum equipment list yet cover most of your needs? I have high end fluid heads and sticks, but this becomes work ih lugging all this around (crew doesn't show up until AM of shoot. Any of you have experience in shipping equipment to location ahead of time? Keep on call at a FedEx or UPS office?

Where am I going wrong? Other than lights and sound, what am I forgetting?

Thanks for all of your input above.

I have the Abel Cine hard case mentioned above, and it's a nice case.

However, I'm looking around to see if there is anything lighter for those on-location shows. I hear there are custom laser cut foams for pelican cases that people make for the red. I'm wondering if anyone knows a good place that makes these?

The Kata OMB 77 will fit your RED already to go for local gigs. I think I saw a video describing it on the kata-bags.com site...you can really fit almost all your gear inside it.

Tim,

I said the same thing when they showed it to me--until they re-arranged the top tray before my eyes. Its velcro based trays are re-adjustable based on the camera configuration. Our RED fit in perfectly already built-up with EVF installed.
