  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best brand for ND filters: Tiffen, Formatt or Schneider?

Stacking is not ideal as you will get a greater chance of reflections.

Um....how much of a actual difference will it make? Most matte boxes are 2-3 stages, seeming to indicate that everyone stacks them.

LA filter heaven...

LA filter heaven...

Where is the best place in LA to get filters and such over the counter? Any chance they are open on Saturday? I get my RedOne on Friday and would like to keep my credit card warm at the local house of filters (closer to Red HQ the better).

BTW great thread. I would have bought the same NDs Shawn did and been frustrated if I couldn't get to the stop I wanted on a bright day. I typically put a Circular Pola on the outside with an ND behind so that would suck up both stages and even with the .9 and the 1.5 stops the Pola cuts I might be at T11 or higher at 500ASA.

Does anyone in LA sell matteboxes over the counter? Maybe used? I would rather get Curt's but since I am getting my RedOne so soon :bleh: it won't be ready  . Don't cry for me...

Hi Shawn,

You use different filters when stacking eg Pol+ND+enhancer.

Every extra sheet of glass has 2 sides for reflections, extra glass equals lower quality.

I try to avoid filters when back lit eg sunset, otherwise you may get several suns in the frame. Some matte boxes allow you to angle the filter to prevent the problem.

I really hope Red designs a matte box one day.. It puzzles me why they didn't include this in their initial lineup.. I mean the ARRI mattebox is nice and everything, but $4000+ ?!!!! You've got to be kidding me.. That's roughly 1/4 the cost of a Red cam for something that holds filters and shades light..

Jim, please destroy that ridiculously priced market soon please!

I take it you're not aware of the upcoming matteboxes by ViewFactorStudios and RedrockMicro.

Stacking is my last option but you canget away with it Just make sure the AC puts a small piece of black duvitine over the trays or some 2 inch black paper tape light getting between the 2 filters will be your biggest pain. Also do not think that the trays fit tight enough together not to do this. Light gets through the smallest crack on a bright day.

Hi Shawn,

A 0.3,0.6,0.9 is very typical ND set used with a film camera outside with 50 asa Film. As Red is nearer 500 asa I would suggest a 1.2,1.5,1.8 as a standard set.

Stephen

Stephen has a great point here as I think most red owners are going to need to compile a large set of ND's. Personally I would not worry about buying any filters other then ND's as raw gives a person a lot of options for looks in post. I do not think you made a mistake with the 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 but like Stephen mentions I think you would want a 1.2, 1.5, 1.8 and maybe even darker depending on the look you are going for.

I know great more to buy but I can see you soon after being burnt by stacking ND's wanting to steer clear of that practice.

Anyone know who sells the darker 1.5 and up glass? I can't find them on BH or FilmTools.

Hi,

It's usually been special order, I have a feeling that will change in 3 months.

I'm wondering if we'll really need all those NDs - especially the 1.2 and darker. I'm thinking that RED's sensitivity can be adjusted down.

In This Thread we see prototype "Acapulco" in use by Mark Neveldine... If there are any ND filters in place, it's just the screw-on variety. Hard to say just what they had there. I suppose we will find out in another day or two. :)

Appropriate ND filters using (from the RED-HEAD) is an urgent NEED for the (future) RED ONE users!!!

Hi,

At the time I emailed Jim about that shot! apparently a high shutter speed was used.

it must have been wicked high....like a 1/2000 of a second.

I recently tried to buy a 1.5 and a 2.0 (we managed to break an our old Tiffen 2.0 and scratch our 1.5).... I gave up in the end..

So if anyone finds a source (tiffen said no) for HQ ND 1.5 and above I'd be like to buy to...

Another possible problem for Red that I posited on an other forum was that the use of heavy ND's on digital stills camera's can cause smeared de-focused images with bad colour casts... The reason is that your ND can let through IR. The ratio of IR to visable goes higher and higher the more you ND. The Nikon D2H was really troubled. I think the chip designers were grabing too muh IR to boost sensitivity.. I purchased additional hotmirrors to deal with this. Not always with sucess.. Any red 1-25 owner fancy testing this with there camera would be apreciated..

I have a full set of ND filters and I rarely use the 1.2 because its very difficult to operate the camera. Anything more than an ND 1.2 makes looking through your viewfinder very dark. I'm hoping RED will have an adjustable ASA/ISO feature like the digital still cameras.

I own (42) 4x5.65 (Panavision) size filters from both Tiffen and Schneider (B+W) and I would say that both companies offer very similar quality products. Its mostly a personal, aesthetic preference. The Schneiders do feel like they are made better when holding them in your hand but optically I can't tell a difference between them and the Tiffens.
