  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BEST BATTERIES

It's down to what you already own.

Thats the best answer I think.

Some way AB mount is more secure but Ive never had a V loc leap off its mount yet. For the most part it has nothing to do with the actual battery technoligy itself so yep, its down to what you already have.

i dont have any..just got Scarlet and im also working at rental company we have Gold mounts also V-Mounts.Cant decide which one to get.seems like gold mount batts little bit expensive than v's

I prefer the locking and smaller size of AB.

I've had lots of problems in the past with the Red Bricks in terms of the V-mount mechanism (so maybe I should say I had a problem with the mounts themselves, as the bricks were always fairly reliable...the only exception was regarding the pin contacts getting hot and receding into the plastic housing...though switronix took care of that for me). It seemed easy for the camera to lose power if it was jostled the wrong way, or if the battery just got bumped in general.

For Epic, I switched over to Anton Bauer, partly due to a slightly smaller form factor, but mostly due to the locking mechanism. Never had a problem with AB/gold mount.

PAGlink

PAGlink

The only 2 V-lock batteries I would consider are Red's own (which have served me well) OR PAG's paglink batteries...

Why Pag:

You can fly with them
You can power an Epic with 1,2,3+.... I have used 3 sometimes for shoulder mount balance or just one if the camera is in your hands
You can charge all your batteries on 2 plates (this is very very usefull)
They are very smart
PAG instills me with real confidence from a safty and longevity pov
They have a really handy micro charger for super lightweight jobs

ALSO I have the latest firmware and there seems to be full comunication compatibility with Red Epic and Scarlet. (you see a percentage)

I would not buy cheap 3rd party batteries the risk is not worth it...

Regards

Michael

PS Anton Bauer make great stuff but the mount simply is not used in my world. Every monitor, lightpanel etc etc all V-lock.

If you go Gold you will have a solid battery and platform for years to come. You can also easily rent gold mount batteries.

I came from the broadcast production world... nearly every TV station or outlet I ever worked for used Anton Bauer. That's all I knew. Therefore, when I went into business for myself, that's what I bought. I like their products, a lot. HOWEVER... I fly a ton and having batteries vetted from security agencies is a HUGE advantage in working out of your own city.

I fly around the world for our work... sometimes, bags get lost and don't show up... I've had that happen a number of times. So we started putting at least one battery in the camera case so that no matter what we could at least start shooting the project. When abroad, I've found V locks are the most popular... in the US, that is a toss up... some places are gold mount some are V... Therefore, I bought some gold to V adapters, so no matter what, if we needed extra power, we could rent it anywhere!

For the first time in my career, I feel that we are in the best possible place... we have some of both. Therefore if we rent something that is V mount... no problem. I can use either and keep on moving!

I think it boils down to what your gear is already set up for, or what you plan to set up for...

I agree with Michael Lindsay's points, which are all valid, and I mention those in my video review of the PAGlinks. http://picturethisproductions.net/index.php/blog/reviews/280-paglink-battery-system

A lot of support for the AB batteries but I'm a fan of V-Mount mostly because of the light that I use (all have V-mount). This allows me to use the same batteries on the camera as I do on the lights. However, they are heavy and bulky. Guess until they make Red volts hold 150WH in a sidehandle, I'm stuck on the size.

Having battery lights is huge for me.

I stick to RedBricks, ever since reading about GMP's causing problems which were not covered by warranty. It's worth a few extra dollars on batteries for the security that you're not going to fry your $35k camera and not have it covered by warranty.

Best,
Tim
Just to be clear on this, I have not seen a single REDUSER report that a GMP battery was the actual cause of any damage to a camera. If you read the post by the member from which this rumor was centered on he states on post #54 "From the guy's who warranty was voided I can say it wasn't a battery problem." He believes he was charged by RED not because the battery caused damage to the camera, but because he used a third party battery.

All LI batteries need to be carried as hand luggage, they cant go in the hold of a passenger jet.

Hey folks,

I am running a Scarlet and Bomb EVF, 5"LCD, +1 Module, and Black Magic Shuttle drive and my Pro X (98 WH) are lasting around 45 mins. Does this sound like a normal running time? Would a red brick run for longer? Thanks for any insight.

That sounds about right with all those things running off the same battery. If you want longer, get either the 130Wh, 160wh, 190wh, or 230wh.

I paired down my Scarlet to just the brain and a red LCD and I get just a bit more than an hour. Based on other peoples experience it seems that is really low for a battery rated at 98 wh. Obviously, I could buy more higher rated batteries but I am concerned there is a larger issue at hand. Thanks for the help.

also, does anyone know if you can charge red bricks on a pro-x switchtronix charger?

the best battery for the red mx…for maybe 2 to three hours is…?

I have SWIT S-8160 -batteries, 190wh. For Red One, 5,6" display, and red drive, they give running time for about 2,5 hours. These are also very good build quality, and they have decent warranties. I think you can get a RED-model too, that will show you the battery-life on your camera-monitor.
