I'm gearing up to purchase a RED Epic Dragon, and would like some advice as to which drone/aerial setup would be best for this camera? Looking to purchase both the camera and drone in the next few weeks. Any advice is appreciated!

I don't know if it's the best aerial setup but my dream is: Freefly Alta with Freefly Movi M15. If I had the money I'd buy this combo :-)

Alta is not out yet as far as I know. It looks like an amazing setup, specially with top mounting solution, which looks cool but only used probably 1% of your shootings as usually clients want shots from the air down... everything else is a crane or dolly,... facing up...
as always here i would suggest Hammer x-8 from Kopterworx - kopterworx.com with Movi M10 or M15. I just came from the set for a big french client with a US director and DOP and they both couldnt believe hot good if flew and how easy it was... If you have some more questions shoot me a PM.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I was looking at the Alta, and it looks pretty sweet! That Kopterworx craft looks pretty cool also. Both seem to favor the Movi M10/M15. I know weight is a consideration, but the Ronin seems like such a better value for the price, and able to carry even more weight than the M15. Can these copter work with the Ronin?

As a drone operator, I can tell you that you better go for the Movi in term of aerial gimbal.
The Movi will offer you more options in term of software, a better stabilization and the difference of weight will implicate a lot the rig you will have to fly, meaning that what you've saved on the gimbal might have to be spent on getting a bigger and more powerful drone to fly the Ronin.

You just have to look on the internet and see how many drone company flying Red are using a Movi. Probably 90% of them. The Movi as proved itself as it have been flight for almost 2 years now.

We are just finishing a drone made to fly a big gimbal like a ronin or a movi with a fully rigged camera.

Hi Benjamin,

Very good point. The reason I'm asking about the Ronin is that I already own one, and it would be great to be able to use the Ronin on both the ground and in the air, as opposed to having to take the camera off the Ronin and taking the time to rebalance for a gimbal on the copter. Because I'm going to be spending so much on the camera as is, I think what I'd like to do is find a copter that can fly the Ronin, and perhaps upgrade to a MoVi at some point in the future. Can you tell me a little bit more about the drone you are developing?

Very interesting. Something I hadn't considered. Do you know which drones they were using?

I know few people who had problems with Ronin on the drones,... there was constant drift,...

I was asking a friend of mine about his thoughts on heavy lifters. He went to NAB and CineGear and said he saw the Tayzu Titan X8, and was really impressed. It does seem to be a pretty good deal, and has impressive specs! The price seems way more in line with what I'm looking to spend. For $9,875 it looks like it comes ready to go in a custom case. The only things I need to add are batteries, a gimbal and camera? Do I need anything else with this setup to fly? Has anybody heard anything about this craft? How does this compare with the CineStar-X8? I really want to stick with a X8 design for safety and reliability.

The Tayzu looks interesting but if I've learn one thing about drones : never trust announcement and wait for field testing.
This frame is in preorder since the NAB and even before. No video has been shown of it flying. For me this is just a bunch of nice pictures and characteristic.

One thing that is interesting is the kind of price difference you can find on the market. This two drones are almost built the same way but one is twice the price. Same frame, same flight controller, motorization is changing but it doesn't justify the price difference, landing gear are different but it doesn't justify anything either (and they look way too short).

I'm building drones for a few years now and I can tell you it's a lot of work. I'm going the hard way because I don't trust something that has been built by someone else and that I can't fix. Accident can happen and I can't afford to send it back to get it fix (would be too long, would cost a lot).

I'm waiting for the day someone is going to release a professional drone that just work, I can trust and I won't have to spend hours checking or fixing. I believe the Alta is going in the right direction and I think Freefly is a trustworthy company but as I said, I will wait that real user test it before thinking about getting one. One thing I would love them to annonce is an integrated landing gear and the possibility to have a ronin as a handheld and flying gimbal instead of having the landing gear on the gimbal.

About what Uros said, I flew the ronin and if you start to do quick moves it definitely doesn't handle it. Or you need to have a really good dampening plate.

Get with Patrick at Aerial Media Pros. He knows the drill as good as anyone

Tayzu has put out some footage of the Titan flying. Looks pretty good! I'm hoping to see some more footage as time goes on, but from what I've seen, it's very encouraging!

We are really happy with the Alta. It is incredibly well built and spooky smooth and quiet. Climbing out at mid power, you almost can't hear it at all. No disappointments so far and I have been at this for 11 years now.
