it's TV buying season and I need some help. Anyone have any opinion on the best 50" or larger, 1080p Plasma or LCD television for under $2000?

Any help appreciated :)

THANKS!

samsung ps50a756 in Europe, I'm not sure about their availability in US. Excellent ratings, quality of picture almost competes with 3x more pricier Pioneer Kuros. Deal of the year for ~1500$. Nothing ever comes close in price and picture quality at the same time.

Everything bigger than 50" is very premium priced right now.

btw you knew plazmas are TVs ; LCDs are monitors only, right? You want TV = you want plazma.

Thanks, I'll look at that samsung.

I'm not sure I understand the distinction. You mean, like, you can't plug a coaxial into them? Because I was under the impression that everything nowadays was a separate box anyway. I'm personally only interested in it having a couple HDMI ports, but I'm sure other will want to watch HD television also. so...

I see lots of sets with a PN suffix, but no PS. Is that because PS is a PAL television? I'm obviously in the states. Does it even matter with HD sets?

i tested them all . took my hpx170 and plugged it in to all the sets. even the plasma sets. the samsung 750 lcd 52 1080p with 120 hz ,was the clear winner. when using the 120 hz setting gives the picture the real (soap opera look ) even when watching movies. first movie was -the exosist- wow . paid $2400 canadian, same tv with the 60hz is $1600.

gotta point out, I despise this feature. I'll take it if it comes with, but I'm sure as hell not going to pay more specifically for it. I know about the whole 24 goes into 120 evenly deal and all that and it's just not important to me.

so what was the TV that was half the price?

i am not sure the 120 hz was the part of the tv that made my 1080p camera look best ,but it does has a filter that the 60hz doesn,t have. if i was to buy again i would get the 60hz. save the $$$ difference.

Sony z series with 10bit panel hands down , you could wait to see how laser tv shapes up.hz rate in Lcd is multi-national , the increased hz value in tv seems like a bit of a gimmick, yet to test it myself, some crazy interpolation process to force the picture

looks like the z series tops out at 46"

nothing comes up on amazon or sony's website. a google search does come up with several uk/australia sites. Again, are these things region specific?

nope ...well as far as i know not in hd tvs in regards to picture frame rate pal v ntsc was eliminated in lcd / plasma , however as far as internal electronics go it could be possibility ....if it isnt available iin your region than i say so it would be the only logical answer , 46 not close enough ? youll have to go see it i guess in my mind it is the best currently on the market

why are the xbr's so much more expensive than the z series?

Samsung LCD with highest contrast possible (in milions ) and with LED backlit (because oldschool backlit tubes goes like to 70% off or less with brightness after few years, and with local dimming for best blacks. Beware of "clouding" (like some Panys, Sonys etc.). Its when you display only black color on diplay in total dark you must get nearly perfect black and not some "grey black" with lighter grey cloud areas

If you don't have to have a Plasma or an LCD, as I don't, then consider a DLP rear projection. They are being phased out right now because people cannot deal with something that is so ridiculously thick at 12", but before they got to that point, the advances made in that type of technology were amazing. I have two DLP's, a 52" Toshiba and recently a Samsung 61", which is nothing short of AMAZING! And it's selling now for around $1500.

I prefer them because they look more like a great, perfectly tuned movie projector (which they sort of are) as opposed to the somewhat flat, monitor like image of LCD's or the exaggerated brightness bomb of plasmas. The blacks are richer and the colors more saturated on the Samsung than on any other LCD I've seen. The lamp is an LED array, so it makes no noise, lasts forever, produces better colors and shows no fade and the damn thing is even 3-D ready. In fact, I know Jim Cameron has like 12 of those down in NZ to preview his Avatar rushes.

Anyway, I love that TV, love it, love it, love it, and once again, for my taste, produces better images than anything in LCD or Plasma guise, and heck, for $1500, you can afford to replace it whenever something better comes along or whenever that something better becomes cheap enough...the model is HL-61A750.

I agree, but the TV isn't for me, and it was made clear that if it couldn't be mounted flat against a wall, they weren't interested.

Hey Brandon,

My brother and I have been looking to upgrade to a 1080p LCD set as well. Currently have had a Mitsubishi 52" DLP 720p for the past 3 years that has served us well.

The main thing for me has become contrast ratio; I'll admit, I get caught up in all the new fads and gimmicks rather easily. If can some how squeeze 4 grand, I'd say go for the Samsung 55" 950 series hands down. With LED local dimming for absoulte TRUE blacks (the 2.35:1 cropped films truly blend with the bezel), there is no LCD that comes close for the price. The Sony Bravia counterpart is about a grand more I believe, but I have not seen one in person yet.

But if your budget is in the sub 2 grand range like my bro, then I'd say the Samsung 650 series hands down. There are a few plug in features on the 750 series, but it doesn't really matter to me. The image quality on the 650, 750, and 850 are all pretty much the same at a nice 50,000:1 contrast ratio. There are some really great deals on Amazon currently if you want to check them out. I highly recommend checking out Samsung though; they're really pushing out some great LCDs.

Panasonic plasmas with G11 panel. This one is $2199. You won't be sorry.

Native 30000:1 vs LCD's "dynamic", which is just a fraud.

There is also a cheaper model, which is around $2000.

You can compare it side by side to other TV's in a decent store. Check closely the blacks and natural appearance of the picture.
If you like that, no LCD or projection TV can come close.
