  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

bellows options for RR Mattebox?

So I am trying to figure out what parts I need to add the Arri bellows to my RR Matte Box.

Bellows Adapter - $441

Bellows ring - $265
http://www.filmtools.com/138bellows.html

Reduction Rings - $60
http://www.filmtools.com/arri-mb-20-r5-100mm-reduction-ring.html

Thats all I need right? Don't want to spend $750 and get the wrong thing. Anywhere to get it cheaper?

Thanks,
Dusty

Hi Dusty,

If I'm not mistaken the 100mm reduction ring is included with the belows. I got the same belows you're refering to here, however after consideration, I think I should have gotten the 114mm belows, and then a reduction rings to 100 and another to 80mm.

In any case you're definitly missing an 80mm reduction ring, that is the most common lens size.

Cheers,
Damien

I would suggest:

ARRI Part # 338204 143mm Bellows Adapter for MB-20
ARRI Part # 338568 Bellows Ring @ 114mm (holds a 138mm round filter)
ARRI Part # 338246 114mm to 100mm step down ring

You can then step down to 80mm, 95mm, etc. for most lenses.

ARRI Part # 338236 100mm to 80mm ring
ARRI Part # 333062 100mm to 95mm ring
ARRI Part # 338242 114mm to 110mm ring part # 338246 not needed works directly with #338568 for Cooke and Red Pro Primes

I would recommend the #338568 bellows (114mm thread) over the # 333060 bellows (100mm thread) because you have a larger outer diameter of 114mm rather than 100mm. It is threaded so can be stepped down but also fits Master Primes, Red 18-50, etc. and can be used with the 110mm ring #338242 for Cooke S4i and the new RED Pro Primes.

FYI- I believe Brian V. and myself were the first to try this operation at a DCS event in LA awhile back.

Yeah, that was a fairly humorous moment as I believe Chris from Element Technica loaned us the screwdriver to pull apart the RR mattebox and reveal the mounting points for the Arri accessories. All while a few REDusers peeked over our shoulders.

how did you fix the bellows adapter onto the RR Mattebox ??

thanks
Manuel

There are two captive knurled thumbscrews on the ARRI bellows adapter which hold it in place on the filter stage. Once you remove the RR rear piece you can attach these into the two tapped points on the RR stage. You will take out 8 screws total from the RR adapter if I remember correctly.

But you can also:

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the reply. I´ll go that route for my RRMB and will take the MB28 to a testdrive soon. The Groupbuy sounds great, but buying stuff overseas which is manufactured about 10km´s away from me sounds odd.

thanks
Manuel

I just wanted to share my experience with the Redrock mattebox and the ARRI lens bellows ring.

I had a few years old Redrock Micro mattebox and ordered a "100mm Lens Bellows Ring for Studio Mode Arri MB-20 Series Matte Boxes" and a "Arri MB-20 R5 100mm Reduction Ring" to 80mm.

To attach the bellow ring to the mattebox, simply widen the diameter of the mattebox by grinding off around 2mm. Then push the ARRI bellow ring firmly into place. It sits there perfectly tight.
