here's the link to the official site with the trailer on the opening page.

or the Youtube HD link

80% of the movie was shot in Australia at the end of 2007 and in January 2008 on one of the first 100 Red cameras ( which was returned to red straight after the shoot for the update) the balance was shot earlier in 2007 in Poland on a Panavised F900.
Belladonna was the second feature in Australia shot on Red.

The real value of the Red footage became obvious in the 2kl DI , the grading flexibility of the red footage as 10bit DPX files versus the Quicktime HD files was astonishing.

The difference in the two looks helped to differentiate the films two parallel stories set in different centuries, works well on the print.

I guess I will take a stab at it.

As far as the trailer, I would have like to have seen more of the backstory, what the conflict is. We have nightmares and burning witches, but what role did the hero play in this? More specifically, what is the conflict for him regarding the past?

You don't have to spell it out obviously, but I got the conflict in the present day. One woman vs. another, which will he choose?

I want to know what the conflict is in the past?

I hate that the modern stuff looks over-exposed, especially the exteriors. Really exposes it as being shot on video. Some people may like that, but I think most people want to make their video look as much as film. The Red stuff screams video (because of the overexposure).

The interior stuff with the Red is beautiful.

All of the f900 stuff looked great, I much prefer it to the Red stuff. The Red stuff I feel would benefit from a more aggressive grade, not so much that there is no longer a difference between the two, but just enough to make it look more filmic. More contrast perhaps? But that is just my personal preference.

I also don't like the titles in the trailer, I would at the very least make the text a pretty font, fade it in and out. But I would replace titles altogether with voice-over.

As always, just my opinion.

I like it, even so a bit confused by it :0

Does He has flash backs? I s that what is happening to him, or He did failed in love with the other girl while choosing the wedding dress for his fiance?

I like the color grading and effects as well, again interesting but a bit confusing for a trailer, didn't quite understand what is happening with the past and the present.

Congrats on the project.

ciao

Trailer looks pretty cool. I like stories that deal with peoples' past lives and them meeting up in the present day. Kind of funny if we just keep running into the same people over and over again.

The images look amazing! Great colour work!

Highlight strategy

Highlight strategy

Hey
thanks for the feedback, I'm dop / post supervisor on this project. How to handle the highlights was the subject of a lot of testing. This was shot on build 11 (? I think) and I went with handheld/spot metering to a tested dynamic range. By choice and necessity we exposed right up to the limit. In Redcine we used a film like S shaped rolloff curve ( ie boosting the highlights but keeping the maximum point the same, 0.3 stop under exposure and a lot of the highlight recovery / desaturate setting to make the DPX's. By retaining the resulting level of highlight detail through the DI the highlights on the 35mm print are amazingly non digital. Not as gentle as film sourced material but pretty hard to pick, no obvious break points to white. One thing I think that helped was that the output to film used camera neg stock (Vision2 35mm 5217 from memory) it has a less linear highlight response than lab stocks and the grain over the sometimes extremely smooth red footage is nice. Ryszard at Media Cafe in Warsaw http://mediacafe.pl did a great job on the film transfer.

I think it looks really fantastic. Great lighting and I wasn't at all bothered by blown out highlights.
