RED spoke with legendary director and cinematographer Greg MacGillivray about his 50 years in the filmmaking business. Greg has been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Documentary for 'The Living Sea' and 'Dolphins.' He developed three cameras for the IMAX format- the high-speed (slow motion) camera, the industry’s first lightweight camera, and the “all-weather” camera used during the much-celebrated feature 'Everest.'

Greg founded MacGillivray Freeman Films in the 1960s in Laguna Beach, CA, with his best friend Jim Freeman. Together they produced several documentaries about surfing and skateboarding- pioneering a cinematic perspective for the genre by putting the viewer in the middle of the action via board-mounted cameras.

Greg has produced and directed over fifty films, over 35 of which are IMAX. He shares with RED his lifelong passion for filmmaking, moving from film to digital, and the profound challenges of maintaining a business for decades, even when tragedy strikes.
