Hi I need one or two more soft lights. I like the area 48, but they were only available in a kit at my resseller here (i got a couple of those). Im not intrested in all the items of the kit so im starting to look past area 48 if i must. I want to try the aperture 120D cob but i could not get an delivery date on those.

Do you recomend any other light over the area 48 in the same price range or cheaper?

I'm also looking at buying another area48, the new kino flo diva-lite leds look interesting, they also operate with battery..

If anyone tries them out please let us know, I really like the power output of our area48..

I'm yet to come across another LED-based fixture that I like the output and colour quality of more than the Area48 - the remote phosphors just make it really kind on skintones, both in colour rendering and thanks to the single source nature of the fixture.

There are other LEDs out there now which come close in terms of colour, but once you diffuse them to create a single source - you lose a bunch of output (which is one of the main advantages of the Area48).

Can you not order from BBS directly? I'm pretty sure they have an online store now.

For me, it's still the softlight to beat - though I'm super keen on the Aladdin Flex lights, as they offer so many incredible rigging opportunities (and the colour quality seems very high too).

I'm also a fan of the BBS Area48s. They may very well be worth what they charge, but it's still an expensive option. Most of my jobs have a G&E truck in the mix, so it's hard for me to get enough days per year that my lighting would "work" on (interviews, some product stuff) to ROI the Area48s. Otherwise I'd already have a couple.

Love the combination of throw and softness, dimming has no effect on color temp, very little heat, can be ordered with battery mount of choice, compact, easy to change the color temp by simply sliding an a different phosphor panel - with the added bonus of not eating lumens with a gel, barn doors fold in neatly and protect the fronts in transit, all metal, lightweight enough for portable stands, etc...

As a RedUser with the more sensitive Helium sensor, the ability to dim the output very precisely without any color/tint shift is particularly attractive. When shooting on location, if I can get a nice shape/level/falloff with the Area48 near talent/featured objects/textures/etc - and - at the same time - play the practicals and natural backgrounds as they are, I can usually better maintain the feel of the location. Best of all, they rock skin tones due to the high CRI and even coverage.

BB&S all the way!!

Unless you need more power in like replacing a long trow 800/1200, then your only option is a Nila Boxer or even an Arena for a 2.5k HMI replacemet.

But there is no Tube fixtures or other units in the category that I like better then the Area 48 for BB&S and their Remote Phosphor tech.

Gotta add +1 for the Area48. Still the best light quality i've used. There's something quite special about it, a combination of tone and the single flat source. I have a bi-flex light from aladdin and also the A lite, both are excellent sources, and technically they match but there's still something about the Area48. The shadows cast especially.

Wish it wasn't so heavy though. I don't see why BBS don't make a lighter version of it.

The cineo stuff may well match well though, on paper at least?

cheers
Paul

Arri also has a remote phosphor panel but its a bit pricey and way heavier..
