They are not, off course (i mean the jumping). Red's universe is rather small and in broadcast land with all the Sony and Panasonic stuff, FCP is still the major NLE, followed closely by Avid. In feature and TV show land Avid was and is the #1 - MC5 is a major upgrade in the right direction, especially for Red projects.

Hans, i agree FCP is very popular world wide and has made very significant in roads into Avid's market in many sectors. They were first to make affordable HD products, XML architecture and very open to 3rd party hardware support. Not mention the Final Cut Studio package delivers tremendous value for money.
I would still say Avid is most definitely king in the Broadcast arena. I have worked as a consultant to scores (around 30) of big picture projects at major broadcasters over the last 5 years, and with the exception of 3 projects, they have all been Avid centric. The size of these systems range from 30 to 300 clients which all seamlessly integrate with enterprise Asset Management, Storage, Newroom, Archive, Ingest and Transmission solutions with native P2 and XDCAM support.
Avid's strength has historically been its editor but it true flexibility and power comes in it's ability to scale and integrate into collaborative tapeless environments. Also in recent years there have some ground breaking developments with AMA and Script sync technologies.
