  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have the chance to get a bunch of these Armatos V-mount batteries at a good price. They're 14.4V 6.6Ah 130Wh LI-ION. These specs are close to Red but the thing that worries me is the Ah rating. Red's batteries are 14.8V 9.8Ah 140Wh. Anyone who understands all of this better care to help let me know if the Armatos should work. Even better - anybody actually using these Armato's batteries please let me know that they do in fact work.

Thanks for all of the help

Here's the Armatos page for all of the battery specs.

Well, I was going to clear this up for you, but now I am even more confused. I thought you could times the voltage by the Amp hours and get the watt hours. However, 14.4 x 6.6 is only 95 watt hours, not 130. Maybe I am incorrectly remembering how you convert it.

Anyone else?

Thanks for at least taking a stab. My issue isn't so much with the 130wh although if you check the link to the Armatos page they do list a maximum voltage of 16.8v.

My understanding is that the wh is simply an indication how long the battery will run - if you're pulling 70 watts than a battery rated to 140wh should last two hours.

My real issue with these batteries (or any other brands for that matter) is if they have enough amperage to run a Red. The maximum discharge current on the Armatos is 6.0A. With Red stated to draw anywhere from 70-90watts depending on what you have connected to it that means 90/14.4= 6.2ah (if this is even a correct calculations to use). That would seem to put this battery right at the top of it's ability if you were say running the HD, LCD, & EVF. Now down at 70watts draw you get 17/14.4 = 4.86Ah.

The other thing that really confuses me is the fact that Armatos lists a maximum voltage of 16.8 which would easily handle the 90watt load but the nominal voltage is 14.4 which puts it closer to topping out with a 90watt load.

While the battery might not last as long it will at least work. If a battery can't handle the amperage it just can't power the camera regardless of its Wh rating. At least is my understanding.

Non-RED batteries etc

Non-RED batteries etc

I have no knowledge of this specific product, so you would just have to try it.

But with any product operating at the very edge of its rated performance, I'd be suspicious of its ability to run consistently or for any length of time.

BTW: The price shown on that link is $439 each and a RED-BRICK is $450

I think the full load of the red might be on the edge for these. But - I have the 90wh versions of the exact same batteries, purchased from a different seller, that are the best performing batteries I have ever used - period. They are cheap, are very consistant, they charge fast on LION chargers, light, don't complain.

For monitors, steadicam, recievers, gyros, whatever else these rock. Look around I think I paid $130 each for the 90wh ones. They are practically disposable. Cells made in Japan.

Thanks for the Red-response. I guess that's why Red developed a battery with a very beefy Ah rating of 9.8Ah.

And yes the list price is a no-brainer - get the Red batteries. I'm buying used. It's a really good deal and would give me 5 batteries plus a simultaneous charger for significantly less than a Red power pack.

Nathan:

There are many variables in batteries that can affect capacity . Temperature, heavy draw can shorten the capacity of the battery drastically, meaning it may not last as long as in ideal conditions. Watts and hours are not inversely proportional over the entire range and under all conditions. Besides, rechargeable batteries, Li-ion included, last only for so many cycles. Since you mentioned you are buying used, for your better price you may be getting just the remaining life of the battery.

I tried to look for detailed specs on the Red battery to compare so I can throw some more light but I could not find any. Like you said, best bet is people that have already used these on their Reds. You may still want to get couple of Red Bricks for critical applications and use Armatos for non-critical needs.

The most detail I've read was posted by Stuart in another thread I managed to find. The Red battery is a 14.8V 9.8Ah 140Wh V-mount LI-ion battery. I don't know if these were the specs you were looking for. It's all I have been able to find but it did come from Stuart, so those specs are for sure.
