Hello,

shooting today we realized that the 5th pin from the left on the red battery plate seemed to get very hot and the plastic melted.

It also made two different batteries very hot and an elastic spring from the red battery plate went throught the plastic and got stuck in the plastic cover of one of the batteries.

Has anyone experienced the same problem?

Best wishes,
Martin

Sounds like the pin of the battery plate is damaged in some way and causing an incorrect mating. Please send an incident ticket to tech support via www.red.com/support.

Thanks, BC

Hi Brent,

support ticket sent.

The strange thing it, that the camera was working all the time.

Kind regards,
martin

Just because you have a working connection, does not mean it is the right connection. :)

hehe ... i will upload two jpgs.

martin

i assume it was a poor power connection, which overheated and caused the "melt-down". it never happened to me with other swit-v-mount-connections over the last 12 years :-(

anyone else experienced the same problem?

best wishes,
martin

btw, i am researching for some handheld solutions and to loose some weight on my shoulder.

Two questions:
- i am thinking of getting battery belts - any bad experience with those?

- i have been wondering if the anton bauer solution is more stable then the v-mount solution?

any thoughts?

best wishes,
martin

use the RED battery belt clip with One RED brick battery for the cheapest solution.
We hang it on the dolly like a mini block and then hotswap with P-tap M to M suicide cable. For longer sequences a battery belt will be great. We had victory battery make us custom blocks and belts w/ RED power connectors. They are fantastic

P-tap M to M suicide cable ... sounds interesting - should i do a search?

Abel sells the "Suicide cable." Give us a call; we have them in stock.

Think it's just a double ended P-tap cable - lets you temporarily plug another brick and P-tap battery plate to the one on the camera so you still have power while swapping bricks on the camera battery plate. Should be fine for the short duration of the swap, but not as a permanent connection without some sort of diode isolation!

if been looking at the v-mount of a sony xdcam 422 pdw700 and as much as i dislike the picture quality of the sony - the v-mount makes a rock solid impression to me.

does anybody know more about these mounts?

kind regards,
martin

We had the same thing happen to one of our plates, same pin. Is this something that RED will fix?

This is why we asked Switronix to come up with their own replacement battery mount for the RED One. Unscrew the mount from RED from your Cradle or Quickplate and attach the Switronix unit in its place. It passes battery status info just like the RED mount and otherwise functions the same, but it is an industry standard robust design. The Powertap on the side is also properly fused, unlike the RED mount's. We have these on all of our rental cameras. Here's the link:

looks interesting. as i have to rely on the pics i see on your site - can you compare this switronix to the pdw700 v-mount?

best wishes,
martin

Well the one on the Sony camera is OEMed by them and is molded into the design of the camera. It is metal and plastic. The Switronix plate is nearly identical in design and build to the IDX battery mount, which the industry standard for v-mount.
