I have been following the development of Scarlet since it was announced. I love the Fixed specs. Incredible camera, especially for the price. I was wondering though, what would be the power solution for the fixed? As I currently understand, the Fixed is supposed to have the basics as a kit, viewfinder, CF or SSD Side mount, Sensor Brain w/Integrated camera and RedMote. Is the battery part of this for the projected approx. 6K? If you have to use the side mount, it adds at least 900$ to the amount. The alternative would be the RedVolt module, so you would need the 300$ accessories adapter, battery module unit, this would be an extra 1500 (roughly). What are your thoughts on power for the Fixed, would this be included as as kit ready to shoot (except SSD media) ?

I think the Scarlet and the Side handle go hand and hand, Because unlike the Epic, the side handle could be used for controlling difference features like Zoom. (at least thats how I would use it). It would also house the RedVolt, killing two birds with one stone. :thumbup1:

Going by the numerous video interviews with Ted and the Scarlet, I was under the impression (probably wrong) that a package would/could include more or less what Ted was holding which was:

Scarlet/Fixed Lens, Side handle, SSD module, 5" touch screen, RedVolt/s, Charger for "Around $6k".

The RedMote was also mounted on the camera during just about every interview but it seems a little redundant with the side handle and the touch screen and if RED had to drop something out of the package I would want it to be that.

But with price increases who knows, although Jim did recently say:

People who are paying attention won't be hurt.

Jim

As I understood it, Referring to price increases and Scarlet.

Sooooooo......with all that said.... I really have no idea... :001_unsure:

Few things I remeber but am not 100% on. I don't think Scarlet package definitely includes a side handle. All we have been told over the months is it will be ready to shot 'out of the box'.

Additionally the side handle price has gone up I think quite a bit recently. I would love it if a package with the side handle came in below 7,000 but I have my doubts, if anything just due to inflation. Still hoping though.

While I will want/buy the side-handle for the User features (controls, zoom, handle to actually HOLD) I will configure my Scarlet as a shoulder-mount, which will require hanging battery(s) off the back for balance if nothing else. It would be a pain to have to buy, say, 2 RedVolts just to power/run the side handle (or would the other batteries power it? I think they would!) - along with the 2, 3, 4 "standard" (insert brand name here) video batteries I will use. I would LOVE to use the RedVolts with the coming Red rear battery module, but am spooked at what the price might be.

As too how the Scarlet F package will be equipped, well Ted at least has left _me_ with the impression that what he was holding at all his presentations was "the" package, so I am expecting the handle as part of this. Hopefully we will all see the Real Deal soon enough.

Another thought I had is getting some Red Bricks. I'm pretty sure you can use the Back Pack system or something like it where it shows the REDmote going. I think this would be the best fit for long in the field shooting that I'd use the camera for.

The end shows Ted stating the rough price indication, to me that seems the handle is included in this estimate. But I haven't seen anything official.

Oh and btw, this is quite old. Since this was taken, the Dollar went down. So might have significant impact on the price... :emote_hanged:

And you can see the CF is still in this image, that has been confirmed that it has changed to the SSD.

Side Handle Battery

Side Handle Battery

The side handle looked to me as if it was extra since it is a significant cost, 900$ up to 1700$ or so by next year. So I would be surprised if that was included in the overall kit, it would be worth it to by the fixed just for the Fixin's! - All those extras, RedMote, Side SSD, Handle add up to 3-4 K or so.

I wonder if they come out with a dummy side hadle just for a single RedVolt Battery solution for the Fixed Kit, to keep it within the 6K range.

Can't wait for a fibnal decision, the Canadian dollar is worth more than the US now, its highest in decades. So Now is a good time for purchasing from the US for us Canadians.

You might want to re-think your understanding on this quote.

Jim was not referring to anything having to do with the Scarlet. He was speaking to those who feared not being able to buy modules before 2012 at the cheaper costs, due to the possibility of delays in shipping dates.

Remember that much has changed in the past 6 months. Don't expect any official word on schedule/pricing until they are seriously ready for its release. Also, remember that much can still change and nobody really has a right to get mad at RED if/when pricing isn't as cheap as one wished for. We should kind of expect change... Just sayin'

I couldn't agree more.

First, RED has acted over the last several years as an extremely benevolent company. They haven't increased prices just because they could. They haven't sold little bits and pieces of code (i.e., firmware) just to make a buck. They've offered ridiculous free upgrades (RED ONE Audio upgrade, anyone? or the upcoming Epic-M weight reduction plan?). They have provided as-of-yet unmatched upgrade options (M-X upgrade, RED ONE trade-in). And they are truly supererogate in what they are doing with their software and constant improvement in codec, color space, and firmware in that they don't just get it working, they constantly add features, for free, that most companies would either put in an expensive "Pro" version or at least wait to charge money for in the next product cycle.

Secondly, based on that, I feel that if RED decides to increase prices, they will be kicking themselves every bit as much as their customers are.

Lastly, perspective. What 3K compressed RAW or RAW camera is out there? Oh yes...that shoots 120 fps. And has HDR. And works from a modular platform, so that the next camera purchase you make is as efficient as possible, financially.

So the Scarlet isn't here yet. That's frustrating.
And it might be more expensive that we thought. That's frustrating.
But the cameras that offer similar specs, like the Alexa, are at least five times more expensive. And even then they lack features. That's pretty damn exciting.

And in this video as well:

It is a little older yet. But you see continuity in both price and components of the Scarlet package.

I plan to power it with my Anton Bauer batteries-pretty much because I have so many of them just lying around & are a bit cheaper then the red bricks.

I believe it will work with the Scarlets too-at least I hope so

Chris, you bring up a great point. Many will think a SideHandle is necessary, while others don't. It will be difficult for RED to find a "package" which hits the sweet spot for the majority of buyers (let alone, the price).

FWIW, at http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?61188-Thoughts-on-the-future-of-Scarlet-and-its-Package... I share some of my thoughts on the matter.

I totally agree and to each his own. As much as I love the idea of a SideHandle, for me the crème de la crème for control of an epic/scarlet is the Redmote. Having both seems like overkill as long as you're not using the SideHandle for power.
For me the price(s) are really going to influence my purchases greatly. Seems that whenever I save enough for the scarlet and some accessories-something else breaks or comes up for a shoot draining my wallet even more.

And that's a great link, great to see a different perspective on the pricing-which is still to speculation as of now. Reckon we'll find out soon since the Epic-x's are going to be rolling out & should be hearing about the Scarlets soon...

Where do you find the bricks that are cheaper then Red's own? I've been looking, but have only found bricks that costs around the same.

The Li-Ion Trimpacks I've seen for around $150, which are still less then the redvolts. And the bricks would be a bit more obviously; the Hytron batteries are pretty much the most expensive out of the AB series, but really worth it. Just google around for the Li-Ion or the Li-Cad ones.
