What's the verdict on the best bang for your buck for batteries these days. I'm looking to buy 4 of them. Not sure if I should just go Red or if there is something out there less expensive, etc.

Thanks

Best bang for the buck? Red batteries 6pack. You won't find any cheaper that communicates with the cam.

If you can find a local dealer then you should consider the BlueShape. Same as the RED BRICK but more serviceable and comes with a one-year warranty. They are however a little more expensive, but you don't want to cheap out on batteries ;-)

By far, the best bang for your buck are #VS2092 batteries. Google that part number and you will get a million hit like this

Here are the v-mount version

http://www.camcorder-battery.org/SONY/new/NP-55.htm

I own over 25 actual anton bauer batteries. I used to use them to power my Varicam, and before that my sony, and my arri SR, and my Steadicam, and through that all manner of arri's and panavisions. I hate Anton bauer. Their batteries are over priced, and they frankly, suck. They crash, they don't handle high amp loads well, and they are finicky. the chargers are finicky on questionable power.

These batts (the VSN ones) are the best batteries I have ever used. they work with the varizoom chargers ( I like the dumb ones), or the chargers that the companies sell with them. They are super cheap, super depenable, and at under $200 practically disposable. The cells are made in Japan.

If you want to spend a fortune on batteries be my guest, but after many years and many batts, these rock.

One disclaimer, AB gold mount is vastly superior to sony v-mount like the Red batteries, If you insist on using the v-mount, you will probably have all the inherent v-mount problems.

Battery value and performance

Battery value and performance

Straight up, the best performance and bang for the buck: REDBRICK 140's.

How do we fix the power indicator LED? - We have two that charge great and work wonderfully... but those lights have stopped working and one of them you can hear a "rattle" clearly something loose.. as sometimes we can rattle it back in place!

Stuart, will Red service batteries if they are walked into Redstudios or the Lake Forest office? In particular several of my batteries the pins have been wedged in pretty deep or missing on the battery block. They still work, but it can be flaky. Also eventually I'd hope we could get them re-celled.

Depending on where you live you may want to check out Global media pro 190Wh made for the R1, which communicates well with the camera, they are almost the same size but lasts two hours (as opposed to 90 minutes for the 140wh RED ones).

In our case it was really the shipping cost that made the choise.

Anyone interested in buying a pair of fresh new Red cells off me? I was thinking of getting the 6-pack but only need 4 at the moment.

Hit me up

I would recommend getting 4 Red battery’s and 2 x-boxx block battery’s. Gives you the flexibility you’ll need for studio shoots where you are not moving the camera too much and other types of shoots where you need to be lightweight or move around a lot more.

Never had an issue with Red battery’s themselves but have had two charger sgo on me over the years.

I own 11 Red Bricks and 4 Red Chargers for my two cameras... and I have to say that I had many trouble with them. Two of the batteries are now dead (with burnt electronics), another is dubious since yesterday, another one had a dead power indicator (wich I fixed myself: the external switch wasn´t able to push the internal switch for a fraction of a millimeter... I made a tiny "fulcrum" with a small piece of wood to force outwards a little the internal switch, and it worked!). One of the chargers is definitely dead (burnt electronics), another works sometimes, sometimes not, another charges only on one side... out of 4, 2 1/2 are defective! I bought a IDX charger wich I find of much better quality, and I´m about to buy another one.
Blueshape is the Italian maker of Red bricks and chargers... I wouldn´t buy from them. Despite my first and last names...

I'll be the counter-point for Anton/Bauer. I've owned Anton's for almost 20 years now. They've always performed brilliantly for me and their support is fantastic. Any time I've gotten myself into a jam I know one call to Anton support will have a solution drop shipped next-day.

For lighter loads the Dionics are fine and are light but for the heavy loads like Red or Alexa I'd stick with the 140 Hytrons. The Hytons are safe, legal to fly and can really take a beating but they are heavier than the Dionic's. Some folks have had bad experiences using the Dionic90's for heavier loads than their built for.

Anton make a great little dolly pack called a QBH-HD (http://www.antonbauer.com/Products/QBHHD) that converts 4 Hytrons (you can put any gold mount battery on it) into the equivalent of their Cine blocks. As an owner/operator I find that a great solution. I can keep one battery type (Hytrons) and use them one-at-a-time when handheld or turn them into a dolly pack when shooting from sticks or a dolly.

This is my experience too. AB mount is much more robust and reliable.

Although I have never had a problem with the mount I have had mixed results with Anton-Bauer batteries.

Displays gone bad, weird calibration issues, a few that although just out of warranty, meaning NOT very old, died suddenly and without warning, no longer holding a charge, or giving a charged reading on the display and shutting off without warning while in light duty use.

I got three of these as well and they seem to be doing a good job so far and do indeed show percentage on the camera. The housing is a bit less robust then the Red Bricks and squeaks a little, but the contacts seems a bit better than Red's. They are a bit bigger and a bit heavier than the bricks, but less then you would expect. They work on the Red chargers. The 190 vs. 140 Watt/hr definitely makes a difference!
