  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi, we're shooting with RED for the first time and I'm gonna use a guy to transfer the media and backing it up. This guy has only done this job with the P2 cards, SXS cards and such...

What I want someone to tell me is how the process of just transferring and backing up files from the red drive and flash cards is. Is it a special structure you need to keep or can you just make a basic copy of all the files on the drive/cards to a harddrive/computer?

We're all real excited about getting our hands on the RED, and we wanna be as efficient as possible on set..

Appreciate your help!

Mangus,
I'll chime in for the sake of how "easy" it is, but I'm sure others with more tech experience will give you some finite workflows.

I've been shooting for about two years now with RED and in the field on productions for tv where i have to shoot, download/transfer footage and color correct in the field.

I follow no written rules on this and I know i might get some feedback on my answer, but basically i connect either my RED drive or card reader with media inserted and copy footage to my destination/storage drive. I have yet to use any programs such as r3data manager to do "checksums" etc....In two years i have never had a clip not transfer while doing straight copies to destination drives. I know you can do a checksum in apples disk utilities as well as use 3rd party software. But personally i just cut and copy. From there it's redcine for a first pass color correction and convert to proress 422 and onto FCP for edit and work in color.

.....VERY EASY stuff!

edit: i forgot to mention....you will see three files on a drive, i copy all three to my destination drive for archive....not just the media files.

I would want to make sure he/she has one of the transfer programs that provide a sum check, etc, to ensure file integrity.

Hey Magnus,
I would have to agree with Michael. For each job I am DMT-ing I always use R3D Data Manager. It just gives you a better peice of mind. Also, the software can be set up to automatically dump your footage once the drive is recognized by your computer, maintaining proper folder structures.

In terms of using Redcine on set, it is a solid software for Q-Cing all of your footage to check all of your format/aspect ratios, audio fed to camera, framerates etc.. But for coloring I would go with a software that will actually create an RSX within your file structure like Red Alert, and Clipfinder.
In terms of your file structure, I would make sure your guy understands that like the P2 material, RED has its own file/folder structure that it needs to have to be able to open each shot properly.

Cheers,

Which tools you choose are also dependent on platform since not all of them are available for both.
