  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Basic set up for FCP

If this is the Ralph I think it is, he is a very nice guy and has been involved in the business for a while. If it is, nice to see you here Ralph. How is that NPR doing? Was it a 9.5-57mm if I remember correctly. If you need anything including any equipment for your Red or help on your editing, feel free to contact me. We can get you to where you need to be and on a laptop.

Ralph, you make a valid point about the sense of security provided by sticking to the information provided by the makers of the hardware and software you are using - however - there are a few things I think you should know.

The RedOne camera and the post production processes used with the r3d files it creates are a rapidly evolving landscape. "Official" papers may be obsolete very quickly as new iterations of various software and firmware bits are released - carefully check the dates on any printed material you are referencing and cross check it against the release dates of all firmware and software you are using.

No offense to the truly amazing people on the Red Team but with so much on their plate their published notes on the interaction of r3d media with other companies hardware/software is not always completely up to date. They are a small team and cannot control what other companies decide to do. Just sayin'

I always advise people taking r3d files into post for the first time to hire an experienced hand to consult on workflow. Each project has its own character and the proper methodology is the one that fits best. The reason there is not one "best practice" is that it really does depend on things like the expected deliverables, total amount of footy, computer hardware/software, etc.

Feel free to contact me off-list if you like.
