I tried finding this stuff but you guys are way ahead of me and the search wasn't turning up what I needed so I though I'd make a little thread.

First of all... where do I find it? How much is it?

Comes with the RedAlert download. Maybe your a PC man?

Which would mean (unfortunately)....no soup for you!!

I'm still a bit confused why RA is still a mac only app. RED, is there any likelyhood that RA and RR will be available on PC at some stage??

Yes, I am a PC guy. I am however going to have to consider a FCP workflow for my feature. Thanks Cam!

So Red Alert is kind of like Red Cine right? And Red Rushes is a batch oriented version of that?

It's not really like REDCine.

RA is a very stripped down piece of software but it allows you to do a nice 'one light' CC and pump things out to prores (or whatever) relatively easily via REDRushes at the debayer quality of your choosing. I used to use it quite a bit but not so much now that the CS4 plugin is out. RA is however much quicker at debayering the R3D file than CS4 is.

If you don't want to jump ship to mac, download the CS4 demo for PC and try it out - it's pretty good even in it's current beta stage.

Yea, that's the only other avenue I guess... I just love my Vegas interface but that will never happen, not aaaaany time soon anyway.

So are you saying that Red Cine offers more control than Red Alert? More color control?

I'll be meeting with Peter soon hopefully to talk about this and other things, it is so much easier to explain things face to face. I just want to have a basic idea of what's out there before I meet with him.

RedCine does offer more colour control than RA. RedCine is basically a 'light' version of Scratch.

As to the other point - that comes down to a Mac or PC question. And if you go the mac route then it's a FCS or CS4 decision (or happily combine the two as I do). I think it's been well established that currently for ease and speed the Mac is the best way to go. Or else get Scratch and go realtime on the PC. All comes down to the amount of dollars you're willing to throw at it (basically you are buying processing power here and only fairly new spec machines cut the mustard IMO) and what software is going to comfortably do the job, that you (or your post team) is comfortable with.

At the end of the day it's down to the right tools in the right hands. check out the stuff Dan Graetz is working on:

That's some of the best looking stuff I've seen to date done 2K Final Cut and CCd in Color. This stuff looks to be bang on the money in terms of lens choice, lighting, exposure etc and illustrates perfectly that you can get stunning results using off-the-shelf software if you get all the fundamentals right in the first place. Creating a R3D with as much info as possible is the best way to get successful results in post.
