  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Basic but interesting sort of HDR tutorial

That article's emphasis seems to be on HDR processing of single frames which are preferably in RAW format. In other words, the HDR process is in the post process, rather than "in camera". I think that kind of HDR is available with any camera that shoots raw, including of course the Red cameras... you just need the right software and the right technique to extract all the dynamic range originally captured.

While HDR from single RAW or even Tiff and or DNG, and even Jpeg, is possible, very BIG difference is that while the image will have a far better Dynamic Range to work with thanks to the process of exposing and processing the tonality of each Duplicated or Cloned picture, this will never come close to the 3, 5, 7, or more pictures captured originally in RAW at different exposure settings, not even close, as the Dynamic Range becomes almost unlimited.

Static HDR capture is far too easy, as you can do so even with the RED ONE, and what an incredible set of 4K images you will get.

As far as HDR capture of moving object or subject, is a different story all together, as no matter how slow they move, they are still moving, from Clouds, to tree branches, to people, animals etc. for this way of capturing HDR you need a very fast camera that can capture the multiple frames at different exposures at the fastest fps rate possible.

I currently use my work horse camera, the Canon 1Ds III, but seriously reconsidering my previous camera for serious HDR in motion shoots, and that is the Canon 1D III with 10fps, you can burst out the 5 Frame shots in half a second or the 3 frame shots in one third of a second.

Now you can see how I'm so badly craving the Scarlet/Epic for some absolutely insane super fast HDR possibilities of capturing moving object subject like it has never been possible before.

ciao
