Hello my friends,

I'm looking to build a Scarlet package some time after summer, but I've ran into a hitch. I am wondering if anyone can enlighten me to the difference between the Base and Pro I/O Module? Does the Base module come with XLRs, or is that something included only in the Pro Module?

I may have missed that info, or that information may not have been released yet. Either way, any answer would be helpful.

The Pro IO Module has full sized XLRs inputs, while the base one only has mini-XLR connectors. So if you went for the base module you'd need adaptors.

I'm not sure about any other differences but there probably are some more ports on the pro module than there are on the base module.

Thank you Stephen. I appreciate your help.

I guess I'm not very good at searching these forums. Thank you Curran.

What about timecode I/O? Do both versions support SMPTE timecode

Hey Alan,

If the search function gives you trouble (and it will) go to Google and enter "site:reduser.net yoursearchterm" minus the quotes. I do that when I look for info on the 18-85, RPPs, etc.

Thanks Ryan. I'll keep that in mind next time the search function is acting wonky. Everyone's help thus far is greatly appreciated.

I dont even know why anyone would opt for the base version.. it wont rent

I can see where you are coming from Zakaree. As I will be shooting (no pun intended) for the Fixed Kit, I will try to Min/Max everywhere I can. I'm just trying to figure out what each module is capable of and at what price-point it can be had, so that I can make an informed decision when I budget my savings for this future investment.

What about size? The base is smaller and therefore valuable in situations where to you don't want all that weight and size. plus the cost saving for those of you who don't rent the camera.

having the HD-SDI and better mic inputs (vs. 3.5mm jacks) is a pretty big incentive for indie people.

the HDMI out on the scarlet just won't work well for video village.

I don´t think this is true... The Base IO Module has full sized XLRs as well... doen´t it?

I don't think RED has officially revealed details on either module, but you can see what Stephen said.

Pro I/O Module $2950
The PRO I/O module will support up to 4 channels of AES-EBU digital audio and will be compatible with mixers like the Sound Devices 552.

The maximum number of recorded audio channels is 4, so enabling two or four AES-EBU inputs disables the corresponding analog audio input(s).

The Base I/O Module does not include the AES-EBU digital audio inputs. There is a Word Clock out pin in the same connector that ingests the AES/EBU digital audio.

Single and dual link HD-SDI with Full size BNC.
Full size XLR Audio Outputs
Full size XLR Audio Inputs
Two Aux power/GPIO ports.
Lens/RS232
Timecode input/output.

Base I/O Module $1750
Single and dual link HD-SDI with Full size BNC.
Mini-XLR Audio Inputs
One Aux power/GPIO
Lens/RS232
Timecode input/output.

No audio output on the Base I/O module.

This info was all gathered directly from posts by the Red Team.

The pro model should be huge and heavy with all those interesting in/out connectors... pretty bad for low weight project.

If the regular one dont come along with 2 traditionnal xlr inputs, that's a pity. I know red focusses on picture but if you can get full sized xlr inputs on 3K$ sony cameras, i guess red could do it...

XLR's on Base I/O

XLR's on Base I/O

Its a connector size issue Yannick, two full size XLRs won't fit in the slimmer Base I/O form factor.

If you want full size XLR connectors the Pro I/O Module is the one for you.

Quality of sound is the same in either case.
