  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BarTech Follow Focus with Remote Start Stop

Do you have the switch on the Bartech set to continuous or momentary? If it doesn't work in one it should work in the other. The switch is right on the front panel of the transmitter.

Can you hear the relay switch on the receiver unit "clunk" each and every time you throw the switch? If not it may be a receiver or transmitter issue.
Do you have 2 run cables? Could be an intermittent cable.
Are you sure the switch is set to momentary, as indicated by Mitch?
Cheers,
Harry

Yes i can hear sound when i remote must stop record . Now i thing that problem is with camera , because camera is tring to stop record , and on LCD on time code place , camera is giving me POST message , But POST will be red until CF is not full .

You are sure the remote start connector in the camera is assigned to start and stop? It can be set to BURST, or other settings...

This is a problem with settings on the BFD and configuration settings on the camera. I am pretty sure the setting on the BFD is MOM (momentary) on the transmitter.

Here is what was posted on the Steadicam Forum regarding the same issue with a Preston system by Charles Papert:

"We had some head-scratching with the run cable at first; with the HU3 set for Arricam (I figured the momentary pulse for that camera would be comparable to RED), the first press of the run button trigged camera run as expected, but the next press to turn it off did nothing. We then hit the run button a third time and the camera shut off (but the HU3 of course was now showing it running). Eventually we discovered an incorrect setting in the camera which was causing this: you can designate either of the two 4 pin ports on the back of the camera to interpret the GPI triggers as camera run or ramp. They were correctly set for run, but you also have to designate what the action of the first and second trigger will be. GPI 1 is the first pulse that is received, which we set to "high" for camera run. GPI 2 is the second pulse, which needed to be set to "low" which turns off camera run (they were both on "high", which is why GPI 2 did nothing)."

I hope this helps. If someone knows the exact settings required please post them and/or send them to me because this has become a FAQ.

Milan Holec, a Steadicam operator in Australia, was kind enough to post a detailed solution to this problem on the Steadicam Forum:

My Name is Milan Holec; I am a Steadicam operator. As a wireless focus for my steadicam I use BarTech Focus; Rotary Style Control Module and Linear Style Control Module with Remote Camera Run Outputs. This Device can control Run/Stop on different cameras: Panavision, ARRI 435/535/SR3, Moviecam Compact, ARRI BL/SR/35-III, Aaton 16/35, Video Camera 12-pin, Panavision Genesis and new RED One; which most of you already know.

First time when I had RED ONE on my rig I’ve used my BFD to control wireless recording and I was facing the difficulties to Run/Stop camera (some people might have the same experience as myself – the difficulty to control new RED ONE with BFD). What actually happened was; when we pushed the run button, the camera started recording, however when we pushed the button again to stop the camera there was message on display showing 1 frame bursting and the camera would not stop recording. If anybody experienced the same problem and would not know how to fix it I might be able to help you with that.

RED ONE has two GPIO input (A/B).

The following steps are for the setup of these inputs:

1. System – setup menu

2. Setup menu – Preferences

3. Preferences – GPIO menu

4. GPIO menu – GPIO Input A

5. GPIO Input A – and select Record please do not select BURST or RAMP; it has to be on RECORD only; you can set the Input A or B - it doesn’t really matter.

Just had an interesting experience regarding a Bartech FF en our newest Red one.
I tried to make the record start/stop work but nothing happened. Cables checked, Bartech receiver checked, everything is fine.
I tried all possible settings of the GPIO, to no avail.
Even a Firmware update, but no luck either.

I had one spare 4-pin lemo connector, took the pins out of the housing and plugged them into the body.
Then I shorted the 1 and 2 pin with a little piece of metal, 1 time, 2 times, nothing...
3 times...... Yesssss, record and stop with the 4th time short.
From then onwards it works with the original cable from the Bartech too!!
And it works with my 15m remote cable that i made earlier!

Amazing, like I had to "kickstart" the gpio inputs !
