Hiya,

I'm looking to travel a lot with Epic and Sachtler Video 20 S1 head (10kg) and a few Red Primes.
Features I'm looking for
- being able to carry them in city
- carry in forest is a bonus
- doesn't get damaged in cargo hold
- we are 2 for camera+ tripod+lenses

Softer case.

This has a sling so should be possible to carry easier in the forest. But its softer so not sure if it will survive the cargo hold. Does anyone have experience with problems on planes?

Tuffpak

Super strong and have wheels so great in the city. Would not be fun while in the forest though. How do you even carry a 10kg tripod in the forest. Just in your arms? Can you have slings on them like with photo tripods?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! :D

I dig this Porta-Brace for my O'Connor 1030 HDs + Sticks. Hard shell interior with a soft exterior. The description says it includes shoulder straps for backpacking it. I don't remember mine having those (maybe that's new). Maybe not as comfy as a fully soft case, but our gear will arrive safely.

Thanks for the tip. that looks like a nice middle ground. Wonder what the shoulder strap works, picture doesn't show. Its so big so it's almost a pity they didnt' include wheels on it as well. Then it would have been perfect.

Wow that is pretty cool to use ski cases. Have you tried them with a shoulder strap. I guess they would not feel overly comfortable on your back since they are hard.
Thanks for the tip!

Yea the Sportubes are pretty handy, use them for various materials, and they are even too cheap if you ask me, great option, but they do become pretty big when you include a Head on the tripod, so I usually put the head on a case or back pack separately, so that the Sportube used for the Sticks remains as thin and light as possible.

Sportubes are good, we transport sliders in them.

Least expensive bags are the padded manfrotto bags, the portabrace is very good too. If we are shipping we still put the padded back and legs in a tripod tube.

Just looked at the bottom of mine. The shoulder straps are hidden under a velcro & zipper panel. So well hidden I never knew they were there. They are full-on padded backpack style straps. Nice! Yeah, wheels would have totally completed this package.

Has anyone tried if the Kata bags are safe for having on the airplane. Will they actually handle heavy impacts?

I'm considering having a hard case and then a soft case inside. Then I can take the soft case while walking and the hard case only on the plane. Pretty convinient BUT expensive...

Andreas,

This would be the way to go! I've traveled for several years at a time... It is just sickening how they treat your gear as "luggage!" They just TOSS that stuff onto the conveyor belt ! I've seen our cases take a tumble right at the door of the plane to the ground! It's because of that... I started shipping "air cargo" when ever and where ever possible! I think if you got a Tuff Pack for the transportation and then the Kata bag for on location, you'd be in business!

After seeing these posts... and already owning several sized Tuff Paks, I think I'm going to do the same thing! I'm getting a Kata bag now!

I also LOVE the idea of those Sport Tubes! That would REALLY help ship a slider! That's a cool idea... I don't know if our sticks would fit in it, but your MYT Slider sure would! I love these posts and the great ideas! Keep 'em coming guys!

I had a fancy tripod hard case. But the baggage handlers destroyed it on the first flight. Then I bought a Tuff Pak, but it doesn't have wheels. So, I have started putting my tripod in a soft case and put that inside an inexpensive hard golf bag case with wheels. There is room for some light stands and other stuff. They only last a few trips, but they only cost about $60. So, no big deal to replace them.
