  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bad news...

People and health and how we deal with adversity are more important than cameras - take care of your health Jim. Maybe a weekend away to your island retreat is in order?

Personally I need to save up more money anyway to afford SSDs so delay is fine by me!

Sad Newser

Sad Newser

With all the great things that RED has done for me and my company, I hardly think this is terrible news. Of course it is sad what happened in Japan, but things like that will happen and it sucks that if caused the people at RED problems, but let's just remember how awesome the cameras are and how wonderful the existing products are. As a RED ONE owner, I could not be happier with my camera and while new things are always nice and exciting, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the original RED. There is no other camera on the market that even stands close and you all have VERY much to be proud of and there is no reason to be taking Blood Pressure medicine. Keep up the GREAT work and I am a customer for life!

Jim, don't define yourself from the outside in.... your heart is your greatest asset!

I know I'm just a middle aged photographer in the middle of the US... but if there is anything I can do for you guys at RED please let me know.

I've donated to the Japan relief effort as soon as a system was in place.... it's the least I could do.

For you guys at RED.... I'm going to work hard and create the best images I can until the email arrives that an EPIC is ready for me..... the longer delay.... will only allow me to have even more funds ready to buy more product.

Group hug!

I have to say, quite candidly, that there are days when I wonder if this is all worth it.
Jim

I want the Epic in my hands, but it would haunt me forever if You or anyone else on the team suffered ill health delivering it. There's been enough pain and suffering from this quake-tsunami-melt-down business. What's another few months of juggling cashflow in the scheme of things?

Thanks for the update Jim. Whatever happens, I'm sure you will do your best and like others have said -- I think the people
need our support, so good to see you are not abandoning the suppliers. Best of wishes, I'm sure NAB will still be an amazing
time and I hope Japan continues to recover. Thanks :)

Anthony

We fill fill the pain of the people of Japan, and understand the process, and the Supply Chain, RED is not by far the only one effected,
so we wish the best for the people of Japan, and hope for the best for those part to become soon available so that every one can get their EPIC.

Thanks for the transparency Jim, and don't let that Blood pressure go to high, I almost lost it two times over, not good... ;)

I'm more focused on the suffering that the people of Japan are enduring. I can wait for my Epic, no problem.
Cheers,
Harry

After talking with our group, and after exhaustive work on supply chain issues... there are 18 parts (out of 18,000) of EPIC-X that come from Japan. More specifically... northern Japan factories. If you are not brain dead and have been watching the news, you will understand that this is bad news.

We are late shipping EPIC for many reason up to now... mostly due to us. We have made changes, had no idea how difficult this project was... yada, yada. Now that we know what we are doing and are ready to rock, including building a complete production line in Irvine... this happens.

Ugh...

While we have a handful of production parts for EPIC-X and will deliver them before NAB as promised, we are now looking at how to make more EPIC-Ms available to EPIC-X customers because there will be a delay in EPIC-X production due to the "Japan-effect".

No one is more disappointed than me... I am spending a fortune in blood pressure medication. Really.

We still feel that we can deliver all EPIC-X orders by summer's end but it will be "back-end" weighted. April and May will be "light".

Life is short. Put yourself in a position doing what you were meant to do. Expect curveballs. They come. Do your best and take the consequences. I guess I am talking to myself...

I promised to be transparent. Mostly that is a good thing. Tonight I am depressed. But always willing to tell you the straight scoop.

Jim

Jim, what does this part of your post mean? Can you expound on it a bit?

This is not RED's fault. I blame W. E.. Deming Jr. for the lack of parts. He's the one who went to the Japanese, after being rebuffed by American manufacturers, and sold them on the idea that they could cut overhead if they did not keep an inventory of parts in storage. That is, a factory with a "just-in-time" inventory where parts are ordered from suppliers to be delivered right before they are needed for assembly could make a product much more inexpensively.

The Japanese were successful in using this method and the rest of the world had to follow to remain competitive. Worked beautifully, too... especially in a world where improvements occur monthly and parts need to be upgraded.

But you just can't plan for a 9.0 earthquake and a nuclear incident.

Personally, I've been adjusting to changing circumstances since the days I ordered my first R-1. I plan for the glory days, but expect to slog through mud along the way. This is just a little patch of mud in the big picture.

I agree, but JIT was many years ago ....... it happened that I worked in a VCR factory as they came up with it ..... the rest is history - the factory was first moved to Hungary (cheaper) and then closed .......

Jim, we fully understand. Don't sweat it. Life is not what happens to you but what you do with what happens. You have already proved you do fine. It's OK to stop and smell the roses, too. In fact it's really necessary. Meeting goals is good, but stress is a killer. We all understand the flexibility of the goals on cutting edge projects. You have been totally out front. We admire you for it and are proud to be part of your community. You have accomplished so much. Thank you.

It's all worth it Jim. Future generations will learn about Einstein, Edison, Morse and Ford in their history classes. And then they'll learn about a guy named Jim Jannard - an innovator and risk taker who proved that you can do anything you put your mind to. Including the impossible. Keep your head up Mr. Jannard, and in the words of the great Pink Floyd: "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".

Thanks for the update Jim, try not to sweat it...you could not have said it better yourself. These problems are small in the big picture and your doing the best you can do, soon it will be water under the bridge. I am an optimist, focus on the positive.

To Jim,

This is my first post on reduser.

The present moment is what it is, yet everything changes. You have made a camera company like no other. You have made the camera of my dreams and I dream big:). I believe a truly successful person is one who can smile at anything and nothing can take that smile away. As a photographer, RED has put a huge smile on my face. Thank you Jim for all your hard work:)
