  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bad news guys. Re: fps in build 4

Well, okay, because I can tell you that one of many reasons I actually ordered a RED camera is because of this forum. You can always get help here and that is something that cannot be found on many camera forums.

That's absolutely correct, Robert. But when people spew useless, unhelpful stuff and try to push it as fact, it's detrimental to the integrity of information on the forum.

Robert my apologies for adding you in my cross-hairs from a previous post (not this one I believe).
Its just that you seem to be agreeing and supporting the perps logic and then adding your own FUD.
I for one am new to the RED Scarlet world and look at this site for knowledge.
Ive been here for years due to my work having a RED MX and my roll as DIT then Colorist.
I hope that I can attribute to your questions in the future but you would too should hold that respect to others here.
I cant stop you from helping trolls and acting like one.
If that happens, you get the same treatment as the earlier perp :P

Hey guys, I'll probably have to start a new thread as this may be a bit buried, but I'd love to hear about your uses as a still camera. I, like others assumed that a DSLR would be a better fit for stills, but do you guys use the scarlet for stills often?

We haven't yet, but using HDRx is a good way to go about this. You can use the X-track to capture your "stills" as it shoots at a faster frame rate.

I've been enjoying this with HDRX on for still capture :)

I use my scarlet a lot for still work. Shooting at 5k 12fps, usually at high shutter 120/s and up.
I find it great when I shoot people that are not comfortable in front of a camera, as they loose the anticipation of a clicking camera shutter and drop there guard quicker.
The only real downsides are; the format, S35 does not look great in portrait, it is very narrow and the need of continues lights as there is no way to sync strobes at the moment.

(in the discussion regarding the Scarlet haveing lesser hardware capability due to the ASICs it contains...)

I don't think there can be that much variation.

Oh. You don't think so? Then why are you stating such things as facts earlier in this thread?

That would suggest that the overall quality is poor if thousands of them aren't working properly and in a way they are designed.

And your suggestion would be incorrect. In the semiconductor fabrication world, it's known as "binning". Manufacturers like Intel, AMD, Samsug, etc... do it all the time. Perhaps you've heard of them?

Here's a nice concise description for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_binning

Challenge to you: now that you've been shown incorrect, are you going to amend your comments?

amen to that steven, For those who are not familiar with manufacturing in the computer world, go ahead and start purchasing LEDs, and learn about yields and how hard is to get one color LEDs but not other colors. The yield deltas on components is much wider than most people realize or understand - specially since most people only see the final product - so it looks like magic :)

I only bad news I see it is beta. ;)But they could have given us more fps in 2K or 3K :)For the Ramping... in what resolution and how high can you go?Cheers

No manufacturer would take defective components and make camera out of them. Including RED. But that's what RED told they did.

I dont see it this way. If you look at the output of any electronic manufacturing company I think you will find components are graded to spec so some are eg faster or perform to tighter tolerances ie resistors. If some higest spec are used in premium devices, they command higher prices. But some may be perfectly serviceable to build other products of not so higher specification but still perform to their own product specifications. Theres nothing wrong with this at all, in this case so far as I understand it two cameras were created both who perform to same imaging standards but one of them is able to capture a higher frame rate that also has some other features resolution, HDR etc. Personaly I value both Epic and Scarlet and Im sure the story isnt going to stop here. Yesterday as a friend of mine said, we got new cameras which was in effect V4 software and it didnt cost me a penny. Happy Christmas to all at Red and Reduser.

Josh you seem to be fishing for problems. Yes, the boards in Scarlets did not meet Epic specs. But they meet Scarlet specs. They WORK. RED also stands behind all their products and has great customer response.

This business model is not so uncommon, and fluctuations in quality are rampant across our biz. Think about stills lenses. It's common knowledge that stills lenses vary in quality tremendously, because of mass production. Some Tokina 11-16's are razor sharp, some a little less so (but still perfectly usable).

However in the Scarlet's case, RED are at least HONEST about the discrepancies, and PERMIT you to purchase the lower grade boards at a discounted price and with more limited functionality. You KNOW what you are getting. The Scarlet allows you to shoot at 4K the same as an Epic at 1/2 the price. The boards just can't take the higher 5K and slow-mo bitrates. Fine. If you want that, buy an Epic.

But at least they are honest, and give those of us on a budget options. I appreciate that. I wish you'd see that part of the argument instead of looking for problem after problem.

Josh, maybe if you post a bit of the work you usually do it would help us understand your point better and all this nonsense can come to an end..
BTW, from everything you posted already, I think the F700 might be a good choice for you.(not knowing your work)

Ok so there are a lot of camera folks on here who are very passionate as am I. There are seasoned DP's who can get more out of their Scarlet than most can out of an Epic... If you need he extra "Stuff" upgrade, RED is wonderful, and has always been wonderful to its customers. Complaining, bad move... Folks I admire on here have shot things on the Scarlet which makes me jealous though I have an Epic - (Phil Holland). Peter Collister ASC has an Epic and he is one of the finest around today. Are you that good? Do you need 400FPS... If you are getting that much work surely a few months renting to own shouldn't be that far fetched.

Again, I am not trying to be a grinch this thread is so out of tune... People wanted the beta release, it's here, it's beta and it's great not perfect. RED will fix this as they always do. This is simply too much attention. Go out and shoot something.

Love you all. Hope the New Year is great for you.

Best Wishes!

- Paul.
