  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bad news guys. Re: fps in build 4

Clearly Scarlet was crippled in frame-rates/sizes to protect the Epic - I think most of us can agree on that at least. Many were hoping, given the increased competition from other camera manufactures, that RED would ease off on those restrictions to help Scarlet compete against cameras like the F55. Is that really so wrong? It should NOT be construed as whining about the existing features in this build.

The Scarlet still outperforms anything near it. The Epic was dropped in price if you are interested. The 13K and 16K Canons are nowhere near the Epic or Scarlet which both have a much larger sensor and can be used for stills and video. If higher frame-rates are needed - one would wonder how much you would need them for dramatic purposes, and let alone in 4K. Again, I don't know you so you may have a indie or larger feature film which needs higher frame-rates in 4K, but then I would say this, rent an Epic or sell the Scarlet and buy one. For full disclosure I own both. I shoot with both. I understand why you would want this, but, there is only so much Christmas pixy-dust can do.

Happy Holidays regardless.

Enjoy the new features and smile.

Best Paul.

I think you don't know your facts or your history. According to the best facts we have, the Scarlet was NOT methodically crippled. It uses ASICs that couldn't meet the speed specs of the Epic (in effect, "rejects"). Thus, we get less performance out of the Scarlet boards. This is a financially viable way for RED to sell the Scarlet at a lower price. So, NO, we can't "agree on that."
I don't think there can be that much variation. That would suggest that the overall quality is poor if thousands of them aren't working properly and in a way they are designed.

Red has stated that its simply not possible to get higher frame rates on the Scarlet because of the boards. I believe them. The camera makes beautiful images. I would love to have more frame rates and would use it if I had it, so when I can afford to get a Epic I will. I respect your right to bitch, no name calling necessary. But do try to enjoy the power this camera gives you and more great free features we were just gifted.

Well, you certainly are entitled to "think" whatever you'd like to think. As to whether it squares with what RED has stated... another matter altogether.

Its a shame that the only thread about this great update on the scarlet section of the site (that I can see) was posted by an idiot...

Wow, a guy on the internet called me an idiot.

Buy an Epic and use the Scarlet for B-Cam. If not use the Scarlet with Twixtor. I use mines with Smoke 2013 and Mocha for cam tracking and retouching on a Rampage 4 Extreme hackintosh. I love the camera especially for photography/video. Learn then ins and outs of the camera then upgrade to the epic or dragon or whatever comes next.

So.....the bad news is that Red didn't add something they never said they would add in the first place?

You guys are bad at this game.

I'm completely stoked for this update. There are a LOT of toys in this one.

What about:
- Pre-Record
- Custom Overlays
- Timelapse
- Long Exposure

Not to mention quicker black-shading, new UI, image flip, noise reduction, 1:1 focus zoom. Anyone complaining about upgrades to the Scarlet needs a visit from the Grinch this Xmas.

You guys did a PHENOMENAL job. Thanks so much.

Josh you are exhausting. You don't own a RED, and yet you almost DEMAND that RED make a perfect "Epic" like Scarlet for you at the price of an FS700. Until someone makes a camera that has EVERYTHING FOR YOU at a price YOU CAN AFFORD, you clearly won't be happy. But are happy to grouse and complain and channel your disappointment (for a camera you can't afford) day in and day out.

As someone that comes on these boards every day looking for new, exciting things to read...you my friend...are becoming a bit of a buzz kill. And I genuinely hate saying that, as I prefer to strike a positive tone on these boards...

Anyone who can put 'bad news' in the title of a thread about build 4 needs their head examined. Period.

Mike

Learn to shoot with your Scarlet for what it is and graciously accept any bonuses you may get along the way. If you want more, buy an Epic.

I would love to see more posts of things shot with Scarlet. RU seems filled with folks sleeping with their cameras and not using them...change that.

So to recap the thread:
-(context) Lots of chatter about FPS/Resolution upgrades in the new firmware.
-New firmware comes out. No upgrades to fps.
-Thread opened about this fact, suggested other options.
-Most are like "oh well, it's still a good camera"
-White knights show up, get defensive and toss around insults.

Everybody chillax, it's a good camera and the new firmware has lots of cool new features. If you're not happy about the subject of this thread, why not start another to talk about what's on your mind?

So much butthurt in here...

There was a BIT of chatter amongst Scarlet users, a BIT, but RED never responded to these ambitious requests, and no on expected them. Except you, the few, grousing few.

Don't make it sound like the rest of us were holding out for higher rez or fps. We weren't. Name me ANY OTHER CAMERA COMPANY that routinely IMPROVES THEIR CAMERAS with firmware updates like this? Sony would make you BUY A NEW CAMERA!

God....the ingratitude is overwhelming.

I think you missed the second half of that quoted post.

I just finished a multi $6 figure$ project on Scarlet using 1KWS @120fps - for a major multinational Alcohol conglomerate… Worked great, client was ecstatic, and the end result is going to look awesome in it's intended environment. If I needed more I would have used / rented a different camera.

Scarlet is great, and better with the new firmware. If you can't make a go of it, then (I'll bite my tongue, lest I get called out for bruising the soft)

I want to see what folks are making with their Scarlet's...dammit! ;)

Red's handshake deal should be "post something you've made with our camera and we'll give you a new feature"

That would be fun.

What are you talking about? I've said that it is stupid to even think that RED would increase the fps on Scarlet via firmware update like this. In the other thread I was talking about future Scarlet.

I can tell you of one thing that is in the manual that has not been implemented and for which i bought the camera ... Audio compression. A year ago, audio compression was indicated as being a software enhancement. It now seems that you need a IO box that costs a fortune.
I bought a camera that still does not do all that is written in the original release manual. I have no regrets about buying a scarlet but if red was as clean as it their competitors, they would have delivered a full specs camera a year ago.
