Now the Red ones are flowing in and going out on jobs, it’s important to have a backup Red camera or accessory on standby for when yours breaks.

To have your camera on standby for others, I’d be thinking of something around the $200 dollar mark per day and full rate if actually sent out.
I’d also be extremely keen to collectively help one another on Red camera or accessory backup on a less formal ‘quid pro quo’ basis.

Needed to help out someone on the weekend and made me think it could/will happen to me in the future so a backup/support network would be so important and make all our offering lower risk.

Thoughts……

Your camera wouldn't be going out.

You keep it....but it's on standby and earning $200/day while still in your hands.

If it does go out, it's your full agreed day rate.

Figure it's a good way for the smaller & bigger guys to reduce their risk.

Cheers,
Dave

Hey David,

Sounds like a great idea. Otherwise you wait until your camera actually breaks before working out where the spare will come from.

I would even be into it going out for less than full rate just to help out. Very frustrating when you have to rent due to equipment failure. Adds insult to injury. If my camera isn't working anyway, I'd rather help out my fellow Aussie-Reds with a reduced rate, and know I'll be looked after in the same way.

Count me in.

How do you do back up internationally?

I would be interested. My camera is in located in Phoenix but I would be willing to rent out my camera on backup at $250 per day (standby rate) and since I only rent my setup with me as technical support or assistant, I would be willing to fly it out with 3 hours notice anywhere in the Southwest (assuming flight avail which there pretty much always is) at full rental rate.

For example, let's say someone has a shoot scheduled for May 20-27, I would agree to a "standby rate" of $2,000 (8 days x $250). If a Red One breaks down on May 25th at 4pm, I would be on a plane with mine by 7pm and on-site by 10pm or next morning.

I agree that this would be excellent "insurance" for a critical shoot where the cost of having a camera down far exceeds the backup and rental cost.

PM me if you are interested. Of course, standby time would be based on availability and would have to be negotiated in advance.

Edit: P.S. I would be willing to fly it even further (like New Zealand) if that is agreed upon in advance and we can check last-minute flight availability. Renter would absorb the higher cost of the airline ticket in those cases. My life and work affords this kind of flexibility yet this would allow me to generate revenue from the camera while working on other projects until/unless I get the call.

Thanks for the support.......

Shooter...hoping we can muster up something local but you never know....24 hours turnaround is something atleast.

One last thing.....I'm thinking you say to a client:

'I have a 2nd Red dedicated to your shoot waiting on standby...!!!

and he'll think about that.....may even hire the second one as well!!!

Cheers,

Well personally I think the idea is good.

There are two options....well three actually....

1. you own a spare Red...hang on there's four.......
2. you have enough friends/partners with Reds....
3. you pay someone to hold their camera on standby as mentioned or....
4. you don't care and rent it out on it's own without a fallback.

Personally I'm very risk adverse and don't want to send my camera out unless I have a backup so I'll be contacting people.

So any body interested in the idea, please contact me and I'll (with permission) ensure your details are circulated to the others who are also up for it.

Dave,

Few thoughts.....
Key thing here is RISK.

i'm saying that initatives like a full standby camera will make you an attractive offering particularily against those that don't or hire companies that may have a perceived poor condition of equipment.
I also expect that as more Reds come onto the market there will be more opportunity to have available backup camera particularily from owner operators that bought their camera for personal projects.

My thoughts about a backup camera co-op would be to have a list similiar to the ANZRUG list we compiled and distributed a while back.
People would nominate if they'd be willing to have their camera on stand-by.
It would be a matter of making those connections with others on the list, getting when/if their camera is available and do a deal.
The deal should be the standby rate and callout rate...agreed before the shoot.
If one person isn't free another should be.
I understand too that people will elect not to prepay the standby fee for their camera and hope by ringing round they can get the camera for just the day rate.
Great too and hope it works for them. slightly higher risk and unknown callout rate. market opportunities at play!
I guess also that people will have closer relationship with a few Red owners and come to their own recipricol arrangement.

Whatever the solution, i'm hoping for a more secure solution for myself and the Red community as this helps all.
The fee for a callout of a body only (or minimum accessories) would probably be less than the original renters fee for a Red package so the original renter will still get something when their camera screws up...as opposed to a hostile producer as he needs to look else where. Even if the production crew is clearly at fault, they still need a new camera and who pays can we worked out afterwards.
If people are interested...I'll send this message out to the ANZRUG list members asking if they are interested as well as others on this reduser forum who wish too participate.
Then I'll make up a standby camera contact list contact/location information and mail it out to all who are on it.

Hope this is clear....any suggestions/comment?

Dave,

Excellent idea, David. Count me in.

Hey David,

Still sounds great. Any thoughts about insurance? I imagine users wouldn't pre-insure a backup camera. Do owners need to provide their own insurance?

Jim

-Would the standby camera have it's own rental contract or be rolled into the initial renter's contract?
-How fast a turn-around would be expected from the backup camera owner if the backup camera is needed ASAP?
-What about damage deposits?
-If the production company was the cause of the first camera going bad, would it be safe to send a second camera into their hands?
-How long will they need the backup camera, since the first cam probably won't be fixed inside a single day?
-Will the camera end up shooting only in the local area, or will the production company be moving around to distant lands?

These are just a few of many questions I'd have about doing a backup deal... not that it's a bad idea, just that it seems the logistics are far beyond simple.

What would you suggest, Lowkus?

Transport....asap, and extra cost/responsibility to original owner/ rent house.

Insurance/contracts....looking into this.

Of course, everything negiotable....Suggestions??

Dave,

I'm afraid I have no suggestions for this one, not without thinking about it for a really long time.

I'm somewhat nervous in general about renting, after reading a thread on a different site where someone was discussing (quite casually) that they dropped a red on the pavement because they were playing around with it on a steadicam/segway mix. And then there were the discussions about Burning Man, and how they recommended taking rental Red's instead of their own, because the dust gets in the camera and completely destroys it. Not a very calming idea.

In regards to transport, I prefer the idea of keeping things local, so that we aren't burning fossil fuels to ship cameras across the world when there are already Reds spread all around.
