  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Back to the Gym...

Tobeorx a question?
1/ weight of the body
2. weight of all those accessories

What about 4/5 lt we matte box, light weight follow focus,
brick on a cable and card in the slot.

Whoa...

I never said or implied that I was trying to configure a hand-held or light weight package!!!

I simply reported the weight of a fully tricked-out Red with a big Cooke 18-100MM zoom. Well, almost fully tricked-out; I still have to add the EVF and a zoom motor. I'm guessing the scale will bump against 50 Lbs.

Hopefully for the last time; I did not say or imply that my Red is too heavy or that it can't be configured for hand-held. In this current configuration, my Red will spend most of it's life on a Chapman dolly atop a 2575. The weight is largely irrelevant.

In response to tj williams, I've not weighed the body or accessories separately and have no interest in doing so. You can certainly use a light-weight Follow Focus, but only a 6x6 Matte Box has filters large enough for the Cooke 18-100MM.

Good shooting and best regards,

right, handheld only in the sense that it is handheld as it is carried from one camera position to another. Yes, you can strip it down- part of its modularity that we all like, but flip side, when weight is less of an issue the thing can get heavy fast.
lots of people who aren't on waiting list or have seen camera in person tell me "I thought the camera was really light and small"
The sooner we get used to it being in the 35mm classification of cameras the better off we will all be. As 35 goes it is lighter than average, but not by a whole lot. once everyone gets used to this there will be no false expectations.
Tobeorx, thanks for posting the weight of your package- and everyone please imagine hoisting your 50lb red up to eye level on weight appropriate tripod and holding it there while trying to engage it into sliding base plate. slightly difficult and annoying. repeat several times a day. do one of those setups while standing on a ladder. (High hat on ladder anyone?) couple of curls on your off week can't hurt. Which I think was the point.

Well, out of necessity, I operated my RED with the Techno 18-90 this weekend in handheld, climbing up rocks, balancing it on my knee at times for low angles and I must say that with the RED Drive, battery, and everything else attached to it, it was heavy for me. Apparently I've become weak. Glad my wife didn't cancel the gym membership this weekend. I think I'll take the easy way out and use primes next time.

Regarding weight...yes, compared to what?

Have you seen a Dalsa...Try picking that beast up!

I (and others) do it everyday. Origin camera body, viewfinder and top handle is 38 lbs. In Steadicam mode you can save about 4-5 lbs with the video tap top. Anyone who has worked with a 535B is already familiar with working with similar weight.

The DALSA Evolution camera on the other hand. That's about 22lbs, maybe less.
