  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Back focus

You will need to remove a "plug" from inside the hole before you can adjust the backfocus screw.

All of my lenses seem to be off as well. Guess it's time to bust out the chart and get it as close as I can. Any other tips on getting a good accurate backfocus adjustment?

BTW backfocus adjustment is covered on page 221 and 222 of the scarlet ops guide.

Each lens is different, brands particualarly. Make sure you double check when switching a lot. I have the red focus which is amazing because you can go to 2k or 1k and really make sure you have focus. Same thing would apply to a chart with the cropping. I would highly recommend the bomb evf at some point. Super sharp and it's kinda works as an additional check and balance. I am always checking to make sure I have a sharp image.

Can someone please provide a link to a GOOD & PROVEN downloadable back focus chart off the web. Thanx

Thanks Guys for the super fast reply. Just one more reason to frequent this site.

Can someone post how to check and fix this, step by step, with one of these charts?

Well, here's how to do it with the Red One, a chart, and a wide angle lens:

Don't forget to watch the second video, too.

Would be the same with Epic but you use the tool on the screw on top of the camera instead of rotating the collar.

Thanks very much Doug. 57K's not bad at all, especially considering there is not even so much as whicker of an amusing cat to be seen.

Thx for a great thread.

I have a question out of the ordinary.

Minolta MD MC mounts have 0,5mm shorter flange distance than an eos mount. It seems like the backfocus adjustment is able to compensate for that 0,5 mm with an MD MC adapter ring that is minimally changing flange depth of the eos mount. I am getting focus to infinity on my minolta lenses in this way. The adapter ring makes the lenses sit rock solid with RED eos mount.

Is it possible to adjust the backfocus too far? In other words could threads be wound out of the "nut" they are sitting in? (sorry my thech english is so so)

I know there is a hard stop adjusting backfocus in one direction, which can be easily felt with a gentle hand. But I have not dared to go far in the opposite direction.

Anyone with experience on this? Input much appreciated. Thx.

Sounds like a call for Red Tech support they'll be able to tell you the tolerances.... .5 mm is probably moving towards the edge of the range but I could be totally wrong....

good luck!
