I want to set up a NAS at my apartment so I can edit wirelessly. I usually work in ProRes 422 HQ 1080p or 2k 444. 98% of my work is 1080p or 2k, none is less compressed than ProRes 444. So raw, DNG, DPX, etc. are not relevant to my current needs.

I can't afford a higher end set up right now, but I also don't need one for my current work.

I was thinking of plugging a USB 3 drive into this router:

And using it for some light editorial and comp work. I would like 100MB read/write. This is for home use and occasional freelance projects and promotional projects.

Considerations:

- TCP over IPv4 throughput max out at around 80% of signaling rate
- SMB/CIFS protocol overhead
- Software and disk latency

All said, expect about 50-60% throughput or less. Translation, expect software slowdown and likely freezes due to latency issues and network housekeeping issues.

I have a NAS made by Synology. It's a great device, RAID and works as a media server for video and music. I have it hard wired to my network. I can't edit from it, though. It' way too slow for that, but as Network Attached Storage, the keyword being storage, it's great.

I bought a cheaper router with support for a network drive. Won't use it for editing, more for media storage. Thanks!
