  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

B4 mount question for new cameras

Or you could use 16mm lenses.

As far as I see it, a 2/3" sensor is a 2/3" sensor so any b4 mount lens will FIT
but to get good results your going to need HD glass.

Glass is good

Glass is good

There is no problem with the quality of the Canon HJ11, it is an HD lens. I am guessing it will fit the mount but the thing I am most interested in finding out is whether the lens can get power from the camera and have full function of controls like the iris. I also don't like to assume too much!

Fingers crossed.

Power yes, run/stop switch yes, iris doubtful.

Would an adapter to put s16 glass on the 2/3" scarlet have glass involved? I'd be okay with a crop factor for FOV, but I'd like to not lose a stop or so due to glass. Also, the 2/3" Scarlet wouldnt be available with PL mount for S16, would it? It would have to have Back Focus in the mount, since B4 doesn't. Hope this make sense.

I got a cable made that plugs into the lemo accessory plug(I assume one will
be available on scarlet) and it powers all the functions of the lens, including start stop. not sure about the iris though, I rarely run in auto iris.

there would be no glass in this case since the s16 is bigger than the 2/3"
frame. The glass in the b4 adapter is to increase the frame size of the lens
since the lens is designed to focus all its light on a smaller target.

In fact I dont think you would need and adapter if they were PL mounts,
you would just have to correct for the crop to 2/3"

My concern with B4 HD glass on Scarlet is this. Really good HD glass is designed to focus R,G & B light at slightly different distances as each channel is recorded on separate chips after passing through a prism as the cameras always used a 3CCD setup.

Now Scarlet has a single CMOS chip, with all light being recorded on the same level will we get odd effects. As I understand it, the RED PL-B4 adapters optics take care of this.

Maybe Matt Dulcos or another guru of glass can cast a more experienced voice this way.

Compared to the terrible coloration with HDX 900s in high contrast transitions where it goes magenta on one side and cyan on the other...
Cheap prisms....
